Name of the Unix superuser: sources?

[edit]

Hi,

Do you have any good source to prove that Unix root user is named from him?

Cheers

I've been around since the early days of BSD (late 70's) and it was common knowledge that it was named after Charlie Root the baseball player. I don't recall who did it and exactly when it came to be, but it was just something that was everywhere. --TruckOttr 23:55, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your answer confirming that. I'm only knowing Unix since 1994 the earliest, and never heard of that. But I'm not in the USA, so I don't know your baseball players too! ;-) Boism 00:15, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

It appears Marshall Kirk McKusick may be the only person in the world that could shed some light on the origins of the name "Charlie Root".

 Done Thanks, IAB! Bob305 (talk) 15:54, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Left ignored by most baseball scholars is that after Babe Ruth's "called shot" home run in 1932 , the next batter Root faced was Lou Gehrig, who hit an even longer home run to cinch the victory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.23.5.10 (talk) 14:10, 19 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
