The article says, "...ultimately reaching a position at latitude 59° north on 15 August 1775 and entering Sitka Sound near the present-day town of Sitka, Alaska. There, and near a Russian settlement on present-day Kodiak Island...." What's correct, 59° N, Kodiak Island, or Sitka Sound? Sitka Sound is nowhere near Kodiak Island - they're all the way across the Gulf of Alaska from each other, 600 miles/1000 km apart - and also the northern tip of Kodiak Island and Sitka Sound are at about 57° N, not 59°. Did they reach 59° N and then turn back south, later entering Sitka Sound? And the bit about Kodiak Island is incorrect? DKMell (talk) 17:00, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Great point! I've been reading parts of At the Far Reaches of Empire: The Life of Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra by Freeman Tovell, which covers the 1775 voyage, but since my focus is on Nootka Sound and the Olympic Peninsula, I hadn't even bothered to fact-check what others had written on here about Alaska. Tovell describes them reaching 56°08´N and sighting Kruzof Island, at the entrance to Sitka Sound. A later voyage went all the way west to Kodiak. My best guess is multiple layers of authors led to mixing up multiple voyages, or maybe misreading the Spanish source. I'll go in and re-write with details from the Tovell text that seem to make a lot more sense! AddieWillow (talk) 18:16, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
