2018: Article observations
[edit]Google Glass outdated?
[edit]The mentions of Google Glass seems kind of outdated. There has been very little news in the past few years about Google Glass and I am not sure how relevant it is anymore. Maybe other similar type devices could also be added.-Joh2325 (talk) 03:22, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- I agree, but have not fixed it yet. Anyone? Sanderflight (talk) 21:27, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
2019: Law Enforcement
[edit]In order to balance the different applications on this page (too much was about law enforcement), I added other applications and deleted a sizeable chunk of the text on law enforcement. This was reversed by User:Snooganssnoogans because pertinent info was dropped.Sanderflight (talk) 06:38, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- The text you deleted included a review of the literature by Jennifer Doleac, as well as a 2018 analysis by the San Antonio Express-News of body-worn cameras in SA. Pertinent content like this needs to be added to the offshoot article if it is to be deleted from the main article. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 09:00, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- If you have time, could you review the changes I made to body worn video (police equipment)? I added the articles you mentioned (and some other stuff that I thought was worth preserving) to the United States section under Results. Thanks.Sanderflight (talk) 13:39, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Doleac's review of the literature should also be added. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 13:53, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Did that and made a second attempt to trim the LE section. Comments and critique are welcome. Sanderflight (talk) 21:27, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Requested move 5 June 2020
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved: 1 as proposed, 2 to Police body camera. (closed by non-admin page mover) Mdaniels5757 (talk) 22:44, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
– "Body camera" is the clear WP:COMMONNAME, receiving 2.8 million Google hits compared to 200,000 for "body worn video" and 750,000 for "body worn camera". Because Google results can be inaccurate, I also pulled Google News results for a random month (January 2019), and got 204 results for "body camera", 52 for "body worn video", and 135 for "body worn camera". (By the way, most of the hits have a hyphen in "body-worn" so that should be included even if BWV/BWC is preferred.)
Separately, the use of parenthetical disambiguation in Body worn video (police equipment) is incorrect, because "Body worn video" does not have a special meaning in the context of police equipment; it is simply a narrowing of the scope of the topic. This is why we have articles on Police brutality in the United States and Authenticity in art rather than Police brutality (United States) or Authenticity (art). - Support this.--Ortizesp (talk) 06:09, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support first as proposed and second as proposed but Police body camera is acceptable. Red Slash 04:47, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support Body worn video → Body camera because of common name; also notice that only camera devices can be worn, "video" per se is the immaterial recording. fgnievinski (talk) 18:13, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support Body worn video (police equipment) → Body cameras in law enforcement or "Body cameras in law enforcement" because of common name, with a redirect to the alternative proposal; either one is better than the present title. fgnievinski (talk) 18:13, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
I wanted to add a bit more on the discussion on police body cameras specifically so I plan to add a paragraph on police discourse. I also want to add a few citations on the topic of police body cameras and a few sentences as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Twintalk21 (talk • contribs) 22:32, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

Merge proposal
[edit]I propose merging Action camera into Body camera. I think the content in Action camera can easily be explained in the context of Body camera, and a merge would not cause any article-size or weighting problems in Bar. Armeym (talk) 08:33, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
Merge completed Klbrain (talk) 14:53, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you! Armeym (talk) 05:56, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- An action camera is something like a GoPro which is often used by Youtube content creators while they travel around videoing whatever. They are often mounted on selfie sticks. A body camera are like those made by Axon Enterprise. They often have features for cloud storage for evidence, and are worn on a police officer's body. The two are different things. Dongord (talk) 01:58, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- These items were merged quite a while ago.
- The main reason for the merge is because the content was extremely similar in writing. Armeym (talk) 21:02, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- Agree with Dongord above - I think the merge is really a flawed move and there should be two articles.
- It is weird and misleading to refer to action cams as broadly "body cameras", as not all action cams are body worn. Nowadays action cams for sports/vlogging are also commonly mounted directly on bicycles, on selfie sticks, surfboards, drones, and on wide range of metal surface via magnet.
- The broad industry term is "Handheld Smart Cameras" tho people tend to specifically say 360 cameras or action cameras. There may be need of a a dedicated article for 360 camera tho "action camera" is acceptable.
- But, I never heard of people say "body cameras" when talking about action cams for sports or vlogging. Body cam seems more a term for surveillance particularly in law enforcement. So think the article should be expanded and be named action cameras for sport and vlogging application while body cameras should be for law enforcement surveillance. JaredMcKenzie (talk) 10:10, 12 October 2026 (UTC)
Split proposal
[edit]I am proposing a formal undo of the July 2025 merge and to split "Action camera" back into its own dedicated article. Merging them was a classification mistake and creates a highly misleading user experience.
Nobody calls them as 'body cameras' outside of law enforcement applications. In consumer tech, sports, and vlogging, people call them as "action cameras" or "pov cameras". The term "body camera" is overwhelmingly used to refer specifically to law enforcement and security surveillance equipment. Per WP:COMMONNAME, articles must be titled using the terms that readers and RS actually use in the real world. Making readers refer to action cam as a type of "body camera" is completely flawed and weird.
And action camera tech have really developed in the past years and you can mount them on wide range of surfaces like bicycle handlebars, surfboards, drones, and magnetic surfaces; and are not explicitly just body-worn devices. Whereas body cams for law enforcement is very different in terms of specialized purpose and technology; and involves factors like chain of custody, low frame rates for maximum battery life, and tamper-proof storage. They are a different product line/topic altogether compared to commercial action cameras.
The important point is the merge is flawed as it dilutes the quality of both topics. Hence I propose splitting into two articles. One for Body cameras that are surveillance tools built for law enforcement, military and accountability, etc while the other article is Action cameras for the smart hand-held cameras built for creative production tools used for sports, vlogging, movie making etc JaredMcKenzie (talk) 10:36, 12 October 2026 (UTC)
