I gave this article a "High importance" assessment, since Bob Pettit is arguably a Top10 player in NBA history. He's #11 in Elliot Kalb's Who's better? Who's best? --Bender235 12:45, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

What, no talk about Petit's role in getting Cleo Hill blackballed from the league? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.32.156.110 (talk) 16:45, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Bob Pettit

[edit]

Why does WIKI show a picture of Bob Pettit wearing jersey #33, next to comment that says his Jerse3y #50 was retired by LSU? 2600:8803:9602:CD00:105D:D49:F36F:8C68 (talk) 21:23, 25 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

It's a good question. My guess is that Pettit wore a different number (33) while playing for the LSU freshman team, but I wasn't able to confirm this was in fact the case. Halvorsen brian (talk · contribs) uploaded the image to Wikimedia Commons back on October 17, 2014 and added it to this article here.
@Halvorsen brian:, it has been a while, but do you recall whether Sporting News provided some extra context for the photo? —Myasuda (talk) 02:39, 26 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
The archived web page for the auction listing makes note of the difference in number, but it does not explain why. The reverse image does not mention the reason either. If I had to guess, you are correct that 33 was his number on the freshman team and he took the number 50 when he joined the varsity squad. The year the image was taken, 1951, would have been his freshman year. —Brian Halvorsen (talk) 04:44, 21 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
