Conflict of interest disclosure and proposed updates

Hello,

I am the subject of this article and therefore have a conflict of interest. I am not proposing to edit the article directly, but would like to suggest a number of factual updates and sourcing improvements for independent editors to consider.

1. Lead paragraph: update status and tense The lead currently presents some roles in the present tense and does not reflect retirement. I suggest updating the lead to past tense and noting retirement, for example:

Andrew Hugill (born 1957) is a retired British composer, writer, and academic. He has held professorial posts in music and creative computing and is known for work in composition, digital music, and interdisciplinary creative technologies.

2. Clarify institutional roles with dates Several institutional roles are accurate but would benefit from clearer dating and past tense to avoid ambiguity. Suggested clarifications: Music, Technology and Innovation programme founded at De Montfort University (1997). Institute of Creative Technologies founded in 2006; directorship ended in 2012. Creative Computing established at Bath Spa University (2013). Creative Computing programme founded at the University of Leicester (2018).

3. Books and publications (update and consolidate) The article would benefit from clearer coverage of three major books published by independent academic presses: The Digital Musician (Routledge, 2008; revised editions 2012, 2018). ’Pataphysics: A Useless Guide (MIT Press, 2012). Aural Diversity (co-authored with John L. Drever; Taylor & Francis, 2022).

These could be presented as representative publications rather than an exhaustive bibliography.

4. Replace or remove unsourced evaluative sentence The sentence:

“Hugill has had a huge impact on the views of Aural Diversity.”

is unsourced and evaluative. I suggest either removal or replacement with a neutral, sourced formulation, e.g.:

Hugill has contributed to the development of the concept of aural diversity through research and publication.

5. Compositions section: reduce evaluative language Phrases such as “well-known works” are subjective. Editors may wish to retain a small number of representative works and commissions (e.g. BBC Radio 3 commission) without evaluative framing. I can supply details if required.

6. Awards and honours The following are independently awarded and may merit retention with citations: National Teaching Fellowship (Higher Education Academy). Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Times Higher Education Award commendation (2006).

I am happy to provide additional independent sources if required and understand that editors will determine what is appropriate to include.

I've made a start, but not with the lead section as I am not really comfortable with the retirement aspect. I have never seen this before, anywhere on Wikipedia, not to say that it has not been done like that. I think the reason might be, in terms of the encyclopaedic nature of Wikipedia, that no-one ever really retires from whatever work or vocation they are sufficiently notable for, sufficient to justify having a dedicated article. Once a composer, always a composer, etc. When someone is deceased, the tense tends to change. So I cannot promise anything here, although the second part might be doable (re. making reference to professorial posts in the past tense).

Having said that, I have made a start on the "Compositions" section and have converted the prose style text into a bullet list of works. This will make it easier to add to in the future. I have sourced each of the works which were carried over from the previous text and have added a few new ones. This section could easily be renamed "Selected works" or "Selected compositions". I know there are many more pieces not yet listed here. The BMIC has a reasonable list. I know it seems a drastic move to replace the wording of the two paragraphs, but I have preserved most of it and dropped the evaluative wording.

I have also started an "Awards and honours" section. This might need to be renamed "Awards and honourable mentions", but that sounds a bit awkward. So I will leave the heading as it is for now.

I think increasing the number of sources is always an important thing, especially with independent citations. If this can be increased, then it might be possible to eventually remove the "hat note" (or tag) at the head of the article.

I don't think all the improvements this article requires can be implemented in one go. It will need multiple editing sessions, and might also benefit from other editors helping. SpookiePuppy (talk) 18:21, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
