Confusion with estries

[edit]

The claim about alukot being described in detail in Sefer Ḥasidim seems to be describing a passage that actually describes estries, not alukot. The passage describes the creatures in question as having multiple names, which Joshua Trachtenberg (1939, page 38) lists as estrie, mare, and werwolf [sic], but not alukah. Instead of citing the relevant passages of Sefer Ḥasidim, however, the footnote for this claim (about the alukah being described in this text) simply links to the About page of a database of the text.

Unless clarification can be provided to confirm that this description (of alukot) exists in Sefer Ḥasidim, I think it should be removed from the article, as it is about a different legendary creature.

The Jewish Encyclopedia does state here that the alukah mentioned in the Hebrew Bible was later identified as a demon in Jewish folklore, so maybe more information could be added from this or other sources. Ezqel (talk) 14:07, 20 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
