Coventry Playground
[edit]In the late 1980s, while at college elsewhere in South Wales, I visited the area after reading about it in a book belonging to my landlord (I think Laurie Lee's "I Can't Stay Long"). I happened on what I guessed (rightly it seems) to have been the Coventry Playground in Merthyr Vale (which suggests I must have read further elsewhere, as Lee doesn't seem to mention this) and found it to be neglected and, if I remember aright, almost bare of equipment, with the paddling pool appearing to be non-functional. From the Wikipedia article this was evidently only about 16 years after its construction. The BBC article linked below has a photo which suggests to me that new equipment may have been purchased, but evidently, for one reason or another, the playground was not a success.
It has since (2010s) been repurposed for bungalows with an information memorial in the boundary wall.
