Removed the English translation: "son of battle". Apart from unsourced, it's completely unjustified. The consonantal complex /bd/ is typically Pre-Greek (see []), and since the lexicon of the Pre-Greek has not been reconstructed yet noone can know for sure what Pre-Greek names actually meant. As for Abderus, the best guess is that his name is associated to Abdera; and that's all that can be said. Viewing the cited sources for "Thromius" being a father of Abderus, both the translation and the original Ancient Greek, there is no mention of a Thromius, Thronius, or any other name or word with even a passing resemblance. Abderus’s parentage is in fact not mentioned at all in Strabo’s work, as far as I can tell. Where does this claim come from? Millennicent (talk) 23:47, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
The source is, as far as I can tell, the Tabula Farnesiana. In the RE's entry on Abderus, Tümpel interprets it as meaning Abderus was born in Thronion. In the entry on Thronikos, Göber explains the Tabula Farnesiana evidently says that Abderus' father was called Thronikos, and that this is a misunderstanding of the source used for the TF, and suggests that the sources probably meant that Abderus came from Thronion.
