As has been discussed and determined several times (specifically November 2019 on this talk page, December 2022 on this talk page, a simultaneous discussion on this talk page in December 2022, yet another simultaneous discussion on this talk page in December 2022, December 2022 at WT:FOOTY, an RFC at WT:FOOTY that was never officially closed, and July – August 2023 on this talk page), consensus is to use American English to satisfy MOS:ENGVAR on this article due to the vast majority of the matches occurring in the United States. MOS:RETAIN states that unless there is valid reason, the variation of English should not be changed. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 15:52, 20 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

This has probably been done to death - but I would suggest that this article is of global importance (evidenced by repeated appearances in Wikipedia top lists) and it therefore seems perverse to refer, in the introduction, to the sport of Association Football by the parochial term "soccer", which - outside the USA - is widely regarded at worst as a childish term not far above choo-choo or gee-gee for train or horse, or at best jocular, informal, or slangy [being short for 'asSOCiation']. WP:IDONTLIKEIT addresses your argument. 1995hoo (talk) 17:37, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Northern winter An interesting argument, a global sport has its global cup competition ( a genuine world cup) in three countries . However, one of those countries might get confused which sport is being played, so the sport's name should be changed . In a global article. Markb (talk) 13:51, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi. Can't we just use "football (soccer)"? SatoruVijnani (talk) 14:48, 20 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The U.S. is not the only country that calls it "soccer". ~2026-35883-16 (talk) 05:14, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, but only a few countries use the name soccer. Approximately 205 countries use the term football while only 6 use the term soccer. So can't we find a middle ground by using "football (soccer)". SatoruVijnani (talk) 13:54, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Why? You haven't presented any evidence (nor even any argument) that any reader is the least bit confused by the existing wording. 1995hoo (talk) 14:10, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The fact of the matter is that no one has any problem understanding what this article is about. No one is visiting thinking they are at the association football World Cup and see soccer and move on looking for the correct World Cup. That is because everyone know both terms. Whether you use them or not or you feel they are "childish", the fact is that no confusion exists around using the term soccer. It has all been discussed and determined years ago and a lot of editing has gone into this article by many editors long before all the last minute people that want to swoop in and change things during the event. @Jkudlick Is there a way of closing this discussion without losing the pinned post? Mugwank (noted introduction, or coining of word)

[edit]

Mugwank (noted introduction, or coining of word). Should it be mentioned in "2026 FIFA World Cup".

And/or mention it in 2026 FIFA World Cup final halftime show? ~2026-40166-38 (talk) 04:16, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

@~2026-40166-38 Please explain what Mugwank is Tech-ScienceAddict (talk) 13:30, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
If there comes a point, when wikipedians have showed some English-language sources about the word having an important connection with the world cup, or the half-time show, then please say so.
The non-English reference can be of help in regard to adjusting perspective, when other perspectives have been showed. URL, https://www.nettavisen.no/sport/gianni-infantino-hvorfor-er-fifa-presidenten-sa-hatet-men-likevel-umulig-a-felle/s/5-95-3157261

Awards

[edit]

The article mentions that 10 goals were nominated, there were 12 (Goal of The Tournament). Idk how to edit it, I'm Spanish. ~2026-41706-60 (talk) 04:00, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Short description

[edit]

Should we change the short description from "Soccer tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States" to "Soccer tournament in North America" per WP:SDLENGTH? — SimpleObjects-9ei 🍂/🌰/🤗 (see talk) 21:15, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Why have you gone straight to a full-blown thirty-day formal RfC? I see no indication of a recent dispute, nor that the suggestions at WP:RFCBEFORE have been tried, let alone exhausted. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:38, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Why is this at RFC? And for that matter, the current short description is clearer. In some contexts North America includes several places that are not hosting the World Cup (Greenland, Bermuda, the Caribbean, Central America, etc). Meters (talk) 23:05, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes. Too early for an RfC Lukewarmbeer (talk) 15:58, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
OK, no response from SimpleObjects-9ei after 23 hours, so I've pulled the {{rfc}} tag. Discussion may continue, but in the normal way. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:45, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
