Primary topic

[edit]

I've dealt with quite a few incorrect redirects/wikilinks to this article. I am unsure if this is the primary topic for Omaha, New Zealand.

There is: Little Omaha (now Leigh), Big Omaha, Omaha Flats, Omaha Bay, Omaha Cove, Omaha Ecological Area, Omaham Road District/Omaha District, and this article. The settlement in question only adopted the name Omaha in the late 20th-century. Prior to that it was unnamed bush land part of the Mangatawhiri block. I think a dab/setindex may be more useful here due to the multitude of entities using the name and the many incorrect redirects/wikilinks mistaking the modern holiday settlement with other Omahas. I've made a set index article at Omaha, New Zealand Traumnovelle (talk) 04:44, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 22 July 2026

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: no consensus. The discussion has stalled. Might I suggest that a future move proposal would address the question of WP:COMMONNAME in more detail. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 02:15, 25 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Ōmaha → Ōmaha Beach, New Zealand – Per above the name 'Omaha, New Zealand' is vague and does not exclusively refer to the holiday settlement. Many incorrect wikilinks pointed to this article but were referring to other areas. I don't believe the macron sufficiently distinguishes this settlement with other entities Traumnovelle (talk) 04:35, 22 July 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. Jeffrey34555 (talk) 05:05, 29 July 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. –Maltazarian ᚾparleyinvestigateᛅ 09:36, 6 August 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. Axolitl (talk | contribs) 02:22, 17 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

See local report using the name 'Mangatāwhiri Omaha' (Mangatawhiri was the name for the area prior to the development of the holiday settlement)
Usage of 'Omaha Beach' (with and without macron) to disambiguate the settlement naturally Traumnovelle (talk) 04:42, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
In that case, the move can be just to Ōmaha Beach because the topic at Omaha Beach, a World War II military operation in France, is not spelled with a macron. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 15:28, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Good point the 'New Zealand' part is unnecessary disambiguation. Traumnovelle (talk) 20:14, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Link #5 doesn't work. Nurg (talk) 05:00, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Neutral on addition of "Beach", but Oppose the addition of disambiguation per WP:SMALLDETAILS. Turnagra (talk) 06:45, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oppose.
1 "Ōmaha Beach" is actually worse, it just invites confusion with the rather more world-famous Omaha Beach
2 Common usage - a very casual search on nzherald.co.nz shows Ōmaha used very frequently, and Omaha in older articles. In this random example, a media boss sells an Ōmaha beach house , which is not, I am amused to see, an Ōmaha Beach house. Somej (talk) 09:01, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
How does [[Ōmaha] not invite confusion with Omaha then?
The NZ Herald also use Omaha Beach Traumnovelle (talk) 00:50, 31 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
