Cuenca (Spanish: [ˈkweŋka] ⓘ) is a province of Spain, in the eastern part of the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha.[3] Its capital is the city of Cuenca.

It has a population of 199,859 in an area of 17,121.15 square kilometres (6,610.51 sq mi) across its 238 municipalities.[2][1]

History

In 1851, Cuenca lost Requena-Utiel to the neighbouring Valencia Province, with which it was developing commercial ties. Nevertheless, Requena-Utiel remained Spanish-speaking (rather than Catalan), while the loss of its most dynamic region left the province of Cuenca relatively underdeveloped economically.

The province is bordered by the provinces of Valencia (including its exclave Rincón de Ademuz), Albacete, Ciudad Real, Toledo, Madrid, Guadalajara, and Teruel. The northeastern side of the province is in the mountainous Sistema Ibérico area.

Besides Cuenca, other large towns and municipalities include Tarancón, San Clemente, Quintanar del Rey, Huete, Villanueva de la Jara, Motilla del Palancar, Mota del Cuervo, La Almarcha, and Las Pedroñeras. The highest point in the province is the Mogorrita [es] peak (1865 m).[4]

As of 2025, the population is 199,859, of which 50.5% are male, and 49.5% are female. Minors make up 14.7% of the population, and seniors make up 23.6%.[2]

As of 2025, immigrants make up 16.3% of the population. The 5 largest foreign countries of birth are Romania, Morocco, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela.[2]
