Mariel Kaney

Mariel Louise Kaney (born August 1991) is a Scottish solicitor and former footballer who played as a midfielder for Hibernian, Spartans and Heart of Midlothian. She captained Hearts after helping the club win promotion to the top division of the Scottish Women's Premier League in 2019. Alongside her football career, Kaney worked as a solicitor in the Lord President's Private Office and in 2022 received the Law Society of Scotland's In-House Rising Star Award.[1][2]

Early life and education

Kaney was born in Edinburgh and attended James Gillespie's High School. She played for Hibernian Girls & Ladies and represented Scotland at under-19 level before moving to the United States in 2010 to play college football at Francis Marion University in South Carolina.[3]

Kaney had received a four-year scholarship but returned to Scotland after one season to study law.[1]

Football career

After returning to Scotland, Kaney played for Hibernian and later Spartans in the Scottish Women's Premier League.[1] She was playing for Spartans by 2016. In March that year she scored and provided an assist in a 3–1 league victory over Forfar Farmington.[4]

Kaney joined Hearts in April 2018.[1] She appeared for the club against her former side Spartans in the third round of the Scottish Women's Cup in August that year.[5]

Hearts won SWPL 2 in 2019 and were promoted to the top division. Kaney remained with the club for the 2020 season and was club captain by the start of that season.[6][1] She continued as Hearts captain during her later playing career; her role was also noted when she received the Law Society of Scotland's In-House Rising Star Award in 2022.[2]

By January 2019, Kaney was working as a deputy legal secretary in the Lord President's Private Office.[7]

She was appointed a director of Big Hearts Community Trust, the charitable arm associated with Hearts, on 9 October 2020.[8]

In June 2022, Kaney won the Law Society of Scotland's In-House Rising Star Award. The judges cited her work in the Lord President's Private Office and her combination of her legal career with her roles as Hearts captain and a Big Hearts trustee.[2]

Kaney later became a project manager at the Scottish Law Commission, where she is listed among the commission's legal staff.[9]
