Jaxsta was an Australia-based database of official music credits, including performers, artists, engineers, producers and songwriters. Its database compiled music-credit metadata supplied by record labels, publishers, distributors and other industry organisations.[1] On 17 December 2025, Jaxsta went into hibernation, ceasing its public-facing operations.[2]

History

Jaxsta was founded in Sydney in 2015[3] by former movie and music industry professional Jacqui Louez Schoorl and her husband Louis Schoorl, a producer and songwriter.[4] Jaxsta had offices in Sydney and Los Angeles,[5] with representatives in London and New York.[6]

The idea for Jaxsta was first formulated by Louez Schoorl in 2006 when she was transitioning from the film to the music industry[7] and noticed music credits metadata was becoming lost with the transition to digital music,[7] as the credits that had once populated vinyl record sleeve and CD booklets were vanishing as downloading was becoming more prevalent.[8] According to the company, the name "Jaxsta" was derived from the idea of the "stars" credited on record jackets.[9]

The company was launched in beta mode on June 13, 2019.[1] At launch, the company said the database contained more than 100 million music credits, including credits for 1.9 million songwriters, 1.3 million artists, 150,000 producers and 100,000 engineers.[3]

On 22 April 2020, Jaxsta announced that it would waive its US$150 annual membership fee and make membership free for the remainder of 2020, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the music industry.

On September 10, 2020, Jaxsta came to an agreement with music licensing platform Songtradr in which the latter invested A$1.92 million into the company.[10] This arrangement allowed Jaxsta members to utilise the revenue collection service provided by Songtradr, while the latter would leverage Jaxsta's metadata to identify uncollected fees.[10]

On 17 December 2025, Jaxsta's public-facing service was placed into hibernation. The company had announced the decision on 21 November 2025, stating that the existing service model was not commercially sustainable.[2]

Database

Jaxsta obtained music-credit metadata from record labels, publishers, distributors and industry associations rather than relying on user-submitted data.[11] Its data partners included the three major labels (Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group), the Merlin Network[12] of independent music companies and unions including the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), The Recording Academy, the American Federation of Musicians and SAG-AFTRA,[9] as well as independent distributors such as CDBaby, DistroKid[13] and SoundCloud Repost.

A commercial API was available, providing programmatic access to the data. In November 2022, Jaxsta introduced a feature matching musical works with recordings, which was intended to assist rights holders with royalty identification, licensing and synchronisation opportunities.[14]

In 2023, Jaxsta received the Music Business Association's "Master of Metadata" Bizzy Award.[15]

Membership plans

Jaxsta's business-to-business membership plan was launched on November 21, 2019.[16] It offered music industry specific tools such as chart alerts for artists and non-artists, industry events calendars, market insights and gave members the ability to claim and manage their Jaxsta profile page .[17]

In August 2021, Jaxsta introduced two membership tiers, Jaxsta Core and Jaxsta Plus. Core was free, while Plus cost US$49 annually and included additional profile-management, credit and chart-notification features.[18]

In June 2022, Jaxsta introduced Business and Enterprise subscription tiers. Jaxsta Plus was renamed Creator, while Jaxsta Core became the free membership tier.[19]

Jaxsta One Sheet

In November 2021, Jaxsta introduced One Sheet, a feature that generated a résumé-style page using information from a user's Jaxsta profile.[20] The One Sheet was populated by information on the user's Jaxsta profile, including credits, social media statistics, TikTok plays, contact details, bio, image and more.[20]

Content

In December 2019, Jaxsta launched its podcast, Humans of Music, hosted by former Rolling Stone Australia editor Rod Yates.[21] Guests included Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, Billy Bragg, Bethany Cosentino, Neko Case, John Butler and M-Phazes.[21]

In June 2020, it was announced that Yates would head up Jaxsta's dedicated editorial portal.[22]
