Felipe Wiegand Rodríguez (12 June 1880 – ?) was a Chilean naval officer who served as Inspector General of the Chilean Navy, then the institution's highest-ranking position, from 1928 to 1929.[1]

Biography

[edit]

Wiegand was born in Valparaíso on 12 June 1880. He entered the Naval Academy in 1894 and graduated as a midshipman in January 1899. During the early years of his naval career, he served aboard several vessels, including the cruiser Esmeralda, the training ship General Baquedano, and the cruiser O'Higgins. His assignments included training voyages across the Pacific and hydrographic work along the Chilean coast.

Wiegand subsequently rose through the ranks of the Chilean Navy, attaining the rank of captain during the 1920s.[2] In 1928, he was promoted to rear admiral and appointed Inspector General of the Navy, succeeding Vice Admiral José Toribio Merino Saavedra. The Inspector General was at the time the senior authority of the Chilean Navy.[1]

After leaving the inspectorate in 1929, Wiegand served as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Fleet. In this capacity, he commanded the Fleet during major naval exercises held at Talcahuano in December 1929.[3] He retired from active naval service in 1930 with the rank of rear admiral.[2]
