Notes for the reviewer

[edit]

Hi, a few notes about this draft:

  • Sources about the phrase itself (WP:THREE). These articles are mainly about the phrase, they don't just mention it:
    • Joe Brockmeier, "Is 2008 the Year of the Linux Desktop?", Linux Magazine, 15 November 2007. The whole article is about the phrase, and it says that every year from 2001 to 2007 was called "the year".
    • Scott Lowe, "Don't worry, Microsoft. 2009 won't be the year of the Linux desktop… nor will 2010, 2011, etc.", Computerworld, 23 April 2009.
    • Simon Phipps, "2014 is the year of the Linux desktop", InfoWorld, 14 March 2014.
    • João Carrasqueira, "The year of the Linux desktop already happened, just not on desktops", XDA Developers, 10 May 2026.
    • There is also a subsection called "The Year of the Linux Desktop" in the book Beginning Ubuntu Linux (Apress, 2010, pp. 21–22). And a journal article in New Media & Society (Stevenson and Valente Pinto, 2025) uses it as an example of hype around alternative tech that is followed by stories of failure.
  • Scope: the article is about the phrase: where it came from, how people kept using it, claims that the year already came, and the running joke. Linux market share has its own article, Linux adoption, so here it is only one short section.
  • Redirects: right now Year of the Linux Desktop goes to Linux range of use#Desktop, and The Year of the Linux Desktop goes to Linux#Desktop. If the draft is accepted, I think both should point here. Linux on the desktop and Desktop Linux are about desktop Linux in general, not about the phrase, so I would leave them as they are.
  • AI use: my disclosure is in the AfC comment at the top of the draft. Later I added Opus 5.5 there (diff), because I also used it to review the draft.
