Wim Vertriest
[edit]Wim Vertriest is a geologist and gemologist specializing in field gemology and natural colored stone research. As the manager of field gemology at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Bangkok[1], he leads a team focused on identifying gemstones, determining their geographic origin, and detecting treatments. His work involves documenting and publishing research findings through various academic and professional channels.[2][3][4][5][6]
Vertriest also manages the acquisition of gemstone samples - including rough rubies, sapphires and emeralds - from global mining locations to support gemological research and education.[7]
Education
[edit]Vertriest attended KU Leuven, the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, his city of birth.[8] In 2014, he obtained a Master of Science in Geology, focused on geofluids and geodynamics. He got a FGA (Fellow of the Gemmological Association) diploma[9] from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, and became a Graduate Gemologist (GG) at GIA (Gemological Institute of America).[10]
Work
[edit]Since 2015, Wim Vertriest has served as GIA's Manager of Field Gemology and Curator of the Colored Stone Research Collection.[1] In these roles, he and his team investigate gemstone origins, composition, and treatments[11][12] while documenting various aspects of the gemstone supply chain,[10] focusing on gathering information that is limited or unavailable.
In a 2019 interview with Asia Lounges, Vertriest noted that the GIA field gemology program had conducted over 90 expeditions to major sapphire, ruby and emerald mines globally. Vertriest and his team developed a reference collection for researchers, containing more than 22,000 samples totaling over one million carats.[8] By early 2025, the team completed their 100th expedition, which involved collecting rough sapphire, spinel, tanzanite, and tsavorite in Kenya and Tanzania.[13]
Vertriest also researches the physical and chemical properties of gemstones and the effects of enhancement treatments. At the 2025 International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) congress, he noted that gem treatments allow for a greater use of rough material, as these enhancements can increase the visual appeal of common stones for use in the jewelry market.[14]
