Plot
[edit]The story follows six animals who are brought together by circumstances and subsequently form an alliance while attempting to establish themselves on a city block. Ray, a rat, serves as the group's planner and strategist. Gus, a goose, is characterized by his willingness to act, while Earl, a squirrel, is highly cautious and frequently anticipates danger. Freddy, a frog, is impulsive and courageous. Carl, a tomcat, is an experienced and dangerous survivor who becomes a mentor to the other characters. Barnstein, a bulldog who arrives from the docks of Europe, later becomes an important member of the group. The animals claim a city block that has been abandoned by others. Their attempts to maintain control of the area lead to conflicts, losses and rebuilding efforts, while their relationships develop throughout the story.
