The Bibites (also known as The Bibites: Digital Life) is an artificial life and evolution simulation video game developed and published by Léo Caussan under Omnia Studios. Initially released independently via Itch.io, the game is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It has gained a dedicated following within the simulation and gaming communities for its open-ended ecosystem, where digital organisms evolve in real-time through natural selection and complex artificial neural networks.

Gameplay in The Bibites revolves around managing, observing, and manipulating a 2D digital ecosystem. The player interacts with microscopic, pixelated organisms known as "bibites." Each organism possesses a unique genetic code and an artificial brain (neural network) that dictates its behaviors, such as movement, hunting, gathering, and reproduction.

Players can take on a "god-like" role, directly interacting with the simulation by dragging entities, altering physics parameters like metabolism rate, friction, amount of food that can exist, or adjusting mutation rates. The game functions entirely as an open-ended sandbox; there are no linear objectives or win conditions. Instead, the focus is on emergent gameplay, where players watch their customized species adapt to the environment, develop new traits, and evolve over thousands of generations.

Development

The Bibites was created by solo developer Léo Caussan. It began as a passion project focused on genetic algorithms and artificial intelligence, originally distributed for free on Itch.io. The developer documented the coding and evolutionary mechanics through regular video devlogs on YouTube, which helped build a significant community of biology and programming enthusiasts.

The game is built using the Unity game engine. To handle the immense performance requirements of simulating thousands of independent neural networks simultaneously, the developer heavily utilized compute shaders and multi-threading. The project later expanded into an Early Access release on Steam, introducing features such as Steam Workshop integration and structured challenge modes.
