SuperMarioGlitchy4 (often abbreviated as SMG4 and sometimes known as SuperMemeGuardian4, formerly known as Super Mario 64 Bloopers) is an Australian independent parody machinima web-series created and directed by Luke Lerdwichagul. It mainly focuses on parodies of Nintendo franchises or other works. The series officially premiered on 7 May 2011, and officially ended on 27 December 2025.[2][3] SMG4 is generally known for having a light-hearted, comedic tone, albeit occasional darker tones. The show is known for extensively referencing internet culture, often using memes and featuring adult jokes. During some episodes, especially during arcs, the tone severely darkens.

The series was a parody of the Japanese video game franchise Super Mario. It followed the misadventures of Mario (presented as a fat, spaghetti-obsessed idiot), and SMG4 (a self-insert of the show's creator), and a wide variety of oddball characters. The series utilized cartoonish slapstick reminiscent of the Looney Tunes and Silly Symphonies combined with surreal humor of shows such as Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, as well as pop culture references and satire of current or previous topics and trends. The series gained a cult following due to its abundance of memes, parodies, and its surreal and dark humor, akin to other adult animated series such as South Park or Family Guy.

Sypnosis

[edit]

The series follows the comedic and often chaotic misadventures of the titular protagonist SMG4—a digital avatar originally styled after Mario—alongside a rotating ensemble cast of video game characters, internet memes, and original creations. While early episodes consisted primarily of standalone comedic sketches utilizing video game software, later seasons introduced serialized multi-episode "arcs" incorporating dramatic stakes, action sequences, and character development alongside the signature absurdist humor.

WOTFI (2011–2025)

[edit]

WOTFI, which stands for "War of the Fat Italians," was an annual flagship event in the SMG4 series, running from 2011 to its conclusion in 2025. Originally conceived as a simple challenge between SMG4 and Mario, the concept evolved significantly over the years to become the climactic finale for the show's complex seasonal story arcs. While early installments focused on comedic challenges and rap battles, later entries shifted toward high-stakes cinematic storytelling and dramatic conflict resolution. The event served as the definitive ending for major sagas, effectively closing the plot threads established throughout the preceding episodes of the year.

Characters

[edit]

Main characters

[edit]
  • SMG4 (voiced by Luke Lerdwichagul) - One of the main protagonists of the series who is also the titular protagonist. He is a partially amnesiac Super Meme Guardian who gets dragged into Mario's adventures. His design was originally similar to that of Mario, but blue. However, this was altered after the Lawsuit Arc to avoid legal action from Nintendo.
  • Mario (voiced by Charles Martinet, Chad Higgs,[e] Douglas "Doug" Drury,[f] David Phillips (singing)) - An Italian-American plumber who is one of the main protagonists of the series. He is significantly different from his in-game counterpart, often being depicted as dumb, destructive, and a source of comic relief.

Major/Supporting characters

[edit]
  • Luigi (voiced by Charles Martinet, Chad Higgs,[g] Douglas "Doug" Drury,[h] David Phillips (singing)) - One of the two deuteragonists of the series. He is Mario's younger foster brother. He is often called gay by Mario and is easily frightened. Despite this, from friendly ghosts to knocking into strangers' houses, he acts bravely when the need arises.
  • Meggy Spletzer (voiced by Yuki Tsujī,[i] Lizzie Freeman,[j] Elsie Lovelock,[k] Ellyn Barclay (singing)) - One of the two deuteragonists of the series and the main protagonist of Season 9. She was originally depicted as an Inkling who is friends with Mario and the others. She likes action and adventure, but dislikes anime. She is not good at cooking. Upon being drained of her ink in the episode "Final Hours", she was transformed into a human being.
  • Fishy Boopkins (voiced by Kevin Lerdwichagul) - A Spike and the son of Joe Boopkins. He is a jolly, dumb, anime-loving man-child loves eating rocks, who is also frequently shown to have bad and very loud singing. His species also happens to be endangered.
  • Bob Bobowski (voiced by WillFromAfar) - A Garo who lobbies to be in SMG4's videos during Season 6. He is friends with the cast, but more so with Fishy Boopkins. He is the focus of Season 8's second story arc that centers on his career as a rapper, which caused his relationship with his friends to become strained. He loses his fame and is able to make up with his friends during Season 8's conclusion.
  • SMG3 (voiced by James Bailey) - The current anti-heroic tritagonist of the series. He is a partially amnesiac Super Meme Guardian and the former arch-nemesis of SMG4 who becomes his rival after they first met. After he was banished to the Internet Graveyard by Susan Wojcicki, he became ruler of said realm. As of Season 11, he is a member of the gang.
  • Tari (voiced by Celeste Notley-Smith,[l] Lottie Bourne[m]) - A shy and quiet girl who's a pro in video games. She also loves rubber ducks, as she is frequently seen with one. She is also a cyborg who can manipulate the properties of video games.
  • Melony Melone (voiced by Kayleigh Smyth) - A watermelon used to replace Meggy that was later transformed into a lazy human girl by Fierce Deity Mask. She was the late Axol's best friend/crush.
  • Saiko Bichitaru (voiced by Minako Kotobuki, Elsie Lovelock (singing)) - A girl from Kevin's School who was mentally unstable due to her wanting attention. She eventually reformed in the episode "Luigi's Lesson." She has since gradually grown to be good friends with most of the cast.

Recurring characters

[edit]
  • Swag (voiced by Microsoft Sam) - One of the main protagonists of the series Guards N' Retards, who used to work as a guard at Fresh Spaghetti Tubbie. He is very unintelligent and often causes many problems in the series, but has been proven to be helpful in rare instances. From Season 12 onwards, he becomes Sonic's husband after being in a relationship with him.
  • Chris Gordman (voiced by Microsoft Mike) - One of the main protagonists of Guards N' Retards along with his partner Swag. He is much more competent and sane than Swag is though at times he has done some insane stuff. He and Swag have been tertiary antagonists in The Anime Arc previously but became allies in the second half of the arc.
  • Peach Toadstool (voiced by Samantha Kelly) - The Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. Despite being easily annoyed by Mario and the gang's stupidity, she does have a good heart towards them.
  • Toad (voiced by Samantha Kelly, Adam Dispirito[n]) - An annoying, stupid, suicidal, sadistic, grumpy servant of Princess Peach who is very psychopathic.
  • Yoshi (voiced by Kazumi Totaka) - Mario's dinosaur friend. His interest include drugs, eating to the point of literal murder, and committing tax fraud, which gets him into trouble with the authorities.
  • Bowser (voiced by Harry Brown,[o] Scott Burns and Kenny James) - The tritagonist of the series. He is Mario's former nemesis where Peach is involved, but otherwise good friends with him. He likes chicken nuggets and is good at cooking. Though he was an antagonist in previous episodes, he has long since retired from villainy.
  • Wario (voiced by Charles Martinet, Thomas Spindler, Chris Patstone (singing)) - Mario's arch-rival who loves scamming for money. He also seems to like fried chicken.
  • Waluigi (voiced by Charles Martinet, Chris Patstone (singing)) - Wario's brother and taco vendor. He was a major threat to the Mushroom Kingdom in his own arc, which was based on a meme of him not appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. At the conclusion of the arc, he was redeemed by SMG3, who would later do the same to Bob.
  • Steve (voiced by Jens Bergensten) - The main character of Minecraft, who owns several farms across the Mushroom Kingdom. Despite his chicken-loving behavior, he yields impressive power.
  • Professor E. Gadd (voiced by Kazumi Totaka) - A kooky and eccentric scientist.
  • Hal Monitor (voiced by Microsoft Sam) - A cyborg police officer with a monitor for a head, who hates illegal activity and typically responds with violence to deter others from doing it.
  • JubJub Boopkins (voiced by Luke Lerdwichagul) - Fishy Boopkins' younger brother, who is often abused by Mario.
  • Rob the Scarecrow - Steve's corn-obsessed scarecrow, as well as Bob's possible best friend.
  • Belle Fontiere (voiced by Jessica Fallico) - A cyborg gamer and aspiring stage actresses originating from Meta Runner, who acts as a doppelgänger to Tari.
  • Whimpu - A character depicted as a "meek simp" who, as well as Boopkins, has an interest in anime.
  • Shroomy (voiced by Luke Lerdwichagul) - A mushroom boy scout and former demon hunter hailing from the Luncheon Kingdom. He is an innocent denizen but tends to suffer from PTSD and a sadistic mindset he obtained during his former life as a Demon Hunter.
  • Kaizo Koorumaniru - A demon who was a friend of Saiko. He was created by the fans in a live stream.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog - The main character of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and the episode "Sonic the Derphog." He is a blue hedgehog capable of running at the speed of sound. From Season 12 onwards, he becomes Swag's husband after getting into a relationship against his will.
  • Old Man Hobo (voiced by Luke Lerdwichagul, Tom Kenny, Dan Castellaneta, SungWon Cho, Bill Faggerbakke & Arin Hanson) - A senile old man that suffers a lifelong trauma of losing his hair and often gets into trouble, who is represented as a pixelated sprite.
  • Teletubbies - SMG4's worst nightmare, which are alien beings from a realm named Teletubbyland. They are depicted as violent criminals disguised as a group of innocent and friendly characters.
  • Jeeves (voiced by Hironori Miyata) - A large sentient fork of high class who runs a milk factory. He is also known for his short temper.
  • Toadette (voiced by Samantha Kelly) - Toad's girlfriend, who is often depicted as being obsessive.
  • The Police (voiced by Ian Hecox) - The Mushroom Kingdom's local law enforcement.
  • Toadsworth (voiced by Charles Martinet) - An elderly Toad who has been Peach's longtime butler ever since she was a child.
  • Donkey Kong (voiced by Takashi Nagasako) - A gorilla who has violent tendencies and loves bananas.
  • Karen Katphish (voiced by Elsie Lovelock) - A cat and single mother of three children who often juggles a myriad of different jobs making minimum wage, and often has to deal with the antics of the SMG4 crew.

Minor characters

[edit]
  • Wizard Rock - A sentient rock who has magical wizard powers.
  • Princess Daisy - The princess of Sarasaland, although she currently resides in the Mushroom Kingdom. It is often speculated that she is Luigi's contrarily outgoing and radiant love interest. In seasons 7-11, her appearances decreased that demoted her a minor character, but in Seasons 11 and 12, she appears as several cameos.
  • Rosalina - The manager of the Comet Observatory where she looks after her various Lumas and the cosmos.
  • Team Killer Ink Leader - The main antagonist of the first SMG4 movie, "Meggy's Destiny." She is a ruthless, competitive female inkling with a dislike for humans, who is willing to do anything to win a Splatfest.
  • Fuego the Water Bottle (voiced by James Bailey) - A sentient Russian water bottle mascot created by the Mushroom Kingdom government to promote staying hydrated.
  • Crazy Raisin Lady (voiced by Arin Hanson) - A crazed, raisin-obsessed elderly lady who wields a machine gun and is set off by anything.

Overarching characters

[edit]
  • SMG1 and SMG2 (voiced by Paul Stylianou[p] and Robyn Barry-Cotter) - The overarching protagonists of the series and the "Genesis Arc." They are two Spudnick-recolored meme guardians who lived in another universe named the Toytoy Kingdom, which had been destroyed by Niles/Zero.

Former characters

[edit]
  • Desti (voiced by Yuki Tsujī) - A deceased Octoling girl and former Splatfest champion. She was the leader of Octoposse and hailed Inkopolis, who also used to bully Meggy until they became close friends, helping the SMG4 gang to save her from Francis. She was unfortunately killed off during the "Anime Arc."
  • Francis (voiced by George Kusanoki Miller, Phil Mendoza (singing)[q]) - A major antagonist in the series, Meggy's arch-nemesis, and the main antagonist of the "Anime Arc." He is a nerdy chameleon whose goal was to make all anime come to life, and was responsible for the kidnapping of all of the Inklings and Octolings. He was even willing to murder Desti to get what he wants, but was eventually terminated for his crimes against humanity and Inkling kind.
  • Fred (voiced by Michael Kovach) - The avatar of SMG0 and the main character of the game Mage. He, SMG0 and later Niles would spend every day simply playing with fireballs and magic shields along with the memes of their universe, until he was accidentally struck down by Niles when he was trying to use the God Box's power to "perfect" their world.
  • Shadow Meggy (voiced by Lizzie Freeman) - The overarching antagonist of Sunset Paradise itself. She is the physical embodiment of Meggy's negative emotions. She soon faded away in Sunset Paradise's season finale after Meggy finally found her purpose in life.
  • Spudnick (voiced by Robyn Barry-Cotter) - The avatar of SMG1 and SMG2 and the main character of the game Spudnick's Great Adventure. He likes teddy bears and adventures. He was killed by Eldritch Zero when Zero fails to turns him into his avatar.
  • Axol (voiced by Kevin Lerdwichagul) - A deceased anthropomorphic axolotl and world-famous manga artist who created a special pen called "Inkweaver" which allows illustrations to come to life. During the finale of "Genesis Arc," he forced Melony into killing him as it was the only option to stop Niles. He later returned one final time in the SMG4 movie, "Revelations," speaking to Melony in purgatory in order to encourage her to continue living and to save the rest of the gang from Niles.
  • Box Club Leader (voiced by Paul Stylianou) - A strange man who worships the God Box, but later died by being overpowered by the God Box.
  • SMG0 (voiced by Michael Kovach) - The overarching protagonist of the series and the "Revelations Arc." He is Fred's recolor who previously lived in his universe, which has been destroyed by Niles.
  • Niles (voiced by Michael Kovach, Luke Lerdwichagul & Kevin Lerdwichagul) - The overarching antagonist of the series and the main antagonist of the "Genesis Arc" and "Revelations Arc." He is the imperfect Super Meme Guardian created by the God Box who has been traveling across universes, destroying them as he goes, whose main desire is to use other avatars as a new avatar to create a universe of despair and sadness. He is also SMG1's, 2's and Melony's arch-nemesis.
  • Mr. Puzzles (voiced by Brendan Blaber) - The final antagonist of the SMG4 series. In WOTFI 2025, he was presumed to have died while closing a rift that had opened in the SMG4 universe alongside his frenemy, Mr. WPNZ. He has since been confirmed to be alive in a trailer for an upcoming series produced by Glitch Productions and mainly animated by ZAMination, known as Calling All Villains.[‡ 1]
  • Mr. WPNZ (voiced by Gianni Matragrano) - A major antagonist in the "Showgrounds Era," who is a mercenary that can shapeshift different weapons from his bod. Throughout his life, he would fall in love with a young anthropomorphic cat named Katana, who became his partner in crime but left him and the life of an assassin to raise their children. Making his debut in "Silence Of The Cats," he is the main antagonist in the "Karen Arc" as he attempted to claim custody over Katana's (now going by Karen) children. He would also befriend Mr. Puzzles and Toomp as a trio, but temporarily became strained with Puzzles after the events of Guns N' Puzzles. He has also been confirmed to be alive in another trailer for Calling All Villains.[‡ 2]

Origins and early experiments (2009–2010)

[edit]

The conception of SMG4 can be traced back to January 2009, when brothers Kevin and Luke Lerdwichagul were having an afternoon session on Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the respective fighters of Jigglypuff and another character that Luke cannot recall. While playing on the "Bridge of Eldin" stage, Kevin activated his Final Smash where Jigglypuff grew in size while in the area where the bridge was broken and being healed. As a result, the Final Smash was cancelled and Jigglypuff stayed as a giant, to which Kevin pointed this out as a glitch to his younger brother Luke. This left Luke bewildered as he had never seen or executed a glitch before, and thought that doing so would be on the same level as "breaking the physics of the universe." With this newfound information, Luke ran to his computer and began researching all about glitches, to which he found that Super Mario Sunshine would be very easy to find and execute these.[4]

Lerdwichagul initially wanted to contribute to the research of glitches found at the time, so he established a new YouTube channel under the acronym of "SuperMarioGlitchy4" nearly a month later. Then, he and his older brother Kevin set to work on documenting these findings by pointing a camcorder at their TV screen–which resulted in shaky footage that would be overlapped with background noises–and uploading it to the platform, which has since been deleted by Lerdwichagul himself. He was very proud of documenting and uploading the video despite the popularity it received, and decided to start a career on documenting glitches for the YouTube community. However, he later discovered in reality that finding and executing them was very difficult, so he dropped the hobby shortly after.[4] Later in late 2009, Kevin and Luke Lerdwichagul switched to uploading photo reels of poses they made while playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but Luke ultimately decided to delete them since he figured that making a YouTube channel dedicated to videos of screenshots would be too boring for an audience.[‡ 3]

Transition to machinima (2011–2016)

[edit]

Around 2010, Lerdwichagul's older brother Kevin introduced him to Super Mario-based machinima, which was produced using footage from emulated versions of Super Mario 64, that would all focus on Mario characters getting into bizarre situations. This intrigued him enough to do the same thing in early 2011, while initially utilizing cheat codes to make the situations chaotic. Lerdwichagul found this difficult to do at the time, as he also needed to manage the weekly work he was required to do when transitioning to high school.[5] Early episodes had few original characters and a much lower production quality than later videos as a result of the software he was using at the time, while also focusing on Mario as the prominent character (among other Nintendo characters).[‡ 4] Then in late 2011, Lerdwichagul switched to the editing software Sony Vegas, which would allow him to utilize more features such as transparent images and background effects. Later around September 2014, Lerdwichagul noticed his older brother Kevin and his friends playing Garry's Mod, a sandbox game that allowed him to act out more absurd situations for his cast of characters (such as people getting shot, things spawning out of nowhere, etc.). Over time, this helped him set up the wacky and absurd style of humor in his videos, while also utilizing parodies of internet memes and pop culture.[4][6]

Foundation of Glitch Productions (2016–2017)

[edit]

Around mid-2016, as Kevin and Luke Lerdwichagul were about to graduate from university and high school respectively, Kevin went to check in on Luke and had observed the channel's growth and its wide audience. He saw the potential to form a business around the channel, later joining SMG4 as a full-time writer and producer. Luke took on a directing role, as well as voicing his titular author surrogate character.[7][8][1] Then in early 2017, Lerdwichagul began taking an animation course while studying media arts at university, despite a majority of his degree involving research (which was not what he was interested in). He decided to have fun with this by applying what he learned in the course to his SMG4 videos as a way of challenging himself. His older brother Kevin–noticing the overall discontent Luke was experiencing at university–asked him if he wanted to turn this into a career, which was a question Luke was afraid of asking since his parents always envisioned him having a more academic job. Lerdwichagul gracefully accepted and dropped out halfway into his first semester at university.[5] On 24 May 2017, Luke uploaded a fan mail video to the SMG4 channel, where he briefly mentioned that he and Kevin founded a new company, dubbed Glitchy Boy (later rebranded as Glitch Productions), to represent the SMG4 web series, and the then-active Hobo Bros. and TheAwesomeMario channels.[‡ 5]

Professionalization and originality (2018–2025)

[edit]

In July 2018, SMG4 began to shift away from its original sketch-comedy style to experiment with different genres. The series took on a more serious tone while also incorporating established continuity and a story-driven format that would involve more threatening antagonists and feature character development, similar to shows such as Steven Universe and Gravity Falls. Beginning in the summer of 2019, more original characters were being introduced very frequently as part of the main cast, while almost every major character taken from an existing property was redesigned, including the titular character. This was done to give the series more originality, make the characters easier to market, and to avoid copyright infringement.[6]

Retirement (2025)

[edit]

On 29 October 2025, Luke Lerdwichagul announced that SMG4 would be coming to an end, clarifying that he felt liked he had fulfilled his creative vision for the series and that instead of running it to the ground or even abandoning it, he would give it a well-deserved ending. He explained that he would release 8 final episodes through November 1st to December 20th where the titular character would hang out with each member of his crew on their individual final adventures, all culminating into one final movie for a proper send-off to the series after its fourteen-and-a-half year run.[‡ 6] He also explained that the SMG4 channel will remain as a permanent archive where viewers can revisit the videos to relive the past and feel inspired to carry the series’ legacy forward for generations to come.[2][3]

Reception

[edit]

The series was met with positive reception for its comedic evolution and creative trajectory, transitioning over time from low-budget machinima to higher-production storytelling and original character animation. Creator Luke Lerdwichagul noted that fans enthusiastically supported the channel’s growth, highlighting positive live audience reactions at conventions and fan tours as pivotal to realizing the impact of the show.[6] Following Lerdwichagul's announcement that SMG4 would conclude after fifteen seasons, commentators reflected on the decision as a fitting end to a fifteen-year YouTube era, noting that concluding the show allowed the series to end on a strong note rather than running until it lost audience interest.[2]
