Rick Wharton

Rick Wharton is a multi-talented Canadian performer and entertainment professional.

In the 1980s and ’90s, Rick served as Head of Promotions for Universal Music/MCA in Ontario, promoting acts like U2, Guns N’ Roses, Tom Petty, The Tragically Hip, Alanis Morissette, and Aerosmith among others.

He left Universal to pursue performance, joining Second City in Toronto and co-founding the cult troupe Plead the Fifth.

Rick created and portrayed the character The Conspiracy Guy on Space: The Imagination Station (1997–2001). The role brought him national recognition—and even a Canadian Comedy Award nomination for Best Male Performance (TV)

The character resonated with audiences for embodying relatable, humorous paranoia about conspiracies like JFK, GMO’s, and privacy—delivered in a caffeine-fueled rant style. ^[1]

He created Rick’s Improv Café at Toronto’s Laugh Resort, a monthly improv show that ran for four years and earned praise for its unpredictable energy. ^[2]

Rick spearheaded the Yo Adrian! annual comedy benefit for AIDS hospice care, featuring top Canadian comedians and musicians. The event raised substantial funds and showcased his heart and talent for organizing heartfelt comedy.

In 2012, Rick became Artistic Director of Festival Hall Centre for the Performing Arts in Pembroke, Ontario. Under his leadership, the venue grew from staging just a few events a year to hosting 55–60 performances annually, including music, comedy, dance, and local theatre. ^[3]

In a 2024 interview, Rick announced his retirement from Festival Hall, citing health issues, marking the end of nearly 14 impactful years pushing the venue’s vision forward. ^[4]

Nominated for Best Male Performance (2002 Canadian Comedy Awards) for The Conspiracy Guy. ^[5]

Another nomination followed in 2006 for Best Male Improviser. ^[6]
