Remzi Gökdağ (born 1968 in Istanbul)[1] is a Turkish journalist and author.

Journalism career

Gökdağ was born in Istanbul in 1968.[1] While studying journalism at Istanbul University, he began his journalism career as a reporter for Cumhuriyet in 1989.[2] He covered Istanbul's urban development and municipal affairs.[3][4]

In the early 1990s, Gökdağ reported for Cumhuriyet on the controversies surrounding the Park Hotel and the Süzer Building, known as "Gökkafes."[5] A lawsuit seeking 2 billion lira in damages was filed against Gökdağ and other defendants over the reporting. The court dismissed the case.[6]

In 1993, he received an award from the Contemporary Journalists Association[7] and an honorable mention in the Çetin Emeç Journalism Encouragement Awards[8] for his story about "Matmazel," an elderly member of Istanbul's Rum community living alone in Beyoğlu.[9]

Gökdağ later worked abroad, serving as the Moscow correspondent for Kanal D and Radikal.[10] In Los Angeles, he continued reporting for Cumhuriyet[11]; by 2005 he had become editor-in-chief of the newly launched California Turkish Times, a Turkish-language newspaper based in California.[12] Cumhuriyet later published his reporting from Zurich[13] and Dubai.[14]
