Piet Paris (real name Pieter 't Hoen, born The Hague, 1962) is a Dutch artist. His practice focuses primarily on drawing and collage and has expanded in recent years to include techniques such as linocut and screen printing.

Education and career

't Hoen graduated from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem in 1988. Over a career spanning more than 35 years, he has developed a visual language informed by modernist graphic traditions. His work is characterized by a reduction to line, form, and colour. Representations of femininity and fashion are recurring elements in his work.

Paris's practice is characterised by an analogue approach and the use of simple techniques, including paper, scissors, pencil, and stencil methods. According to Vogue, Paris's work reflects a modernist approach and is guided by the principle that "less is more". Paris has worked as a fashion illustrator for more than three decades, with an international career spanning magazines, exhibitions, and fashion institutions.

In 1998, 't Hoen was among the co-founders of the master's programme Fashion Institute Arnhem at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem. Since 2017, he has taught design drawing at the Fashion & Textile department of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.

Curatorship and presentations

From 2005 to 2009, 't Hoen served as head curator of the Arnhem Mode Biënnale. In 2012, he worked as art director on the design of the Arnhem hotel Hotel Modez.

In 2010, Piet Paris created the set design for Viktor & Rolf's Spring/Summer couture show Cutting Edge Couture. He had previously taught designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren during their studies.

In 2014, Paris served as guest curator at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, where he curated the exhibition Fashion, The Musical. The exhibition presented more than 150 objects from the museum's collection, combining contemporary fashion by designers such as Comme des Garçons, Maison Martin Margiela, Iris van Herpen, and Viktor & Rolf with historic costumes from the 17th and 18th centuries.

In 2023, Paris presented the solo exhibition Piet Paris and others – Illustrations, glass art, fashion at Museum JAN in Amstelveen. The exhibition included new work created by Paris in response to the museum's glass art collection, placing his drawings alongside fashion and historic and contemporary glass objects.

In September 2025, Paris completed an artist residency at Rosewood Amsterdam titled The Dress, The Drawing & The Draftsman, during which visitors were able to follow his working process in an open studio setting. During the residency, he produced a series of sketches and graphic works that expanded his use of printmaking techniques to include linocut and screen printing.

In January 2026, Paris presented new work at COKO Space in Amsterdam.

Recognition and collections

In 2008, 't Hoen received the Grand Seigneur Fashion Prize and produced illustrations, displays, and window installations for the American department store Saks Fifth Avenue.

Drawings by Piet Paris are held in the Rijksprentenkabinet of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Centraal Museum in Utrecht has acquired ten of his works. According to museum director Edwin Janssen, Paris's drawing style aligns with that of Dick Bruna and Gerrit Rietveld.

Part of his archive is preserved during his lifetime at the Gelders Archief in Arnhem by commission of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

Paris lives and works in Amsterdam.
