Peter Peake is a British animation director, animator, and filmmaker. He has worked with the animation studio Aardman Animations and has directed short films, television productions, and commercials using techniques including stop-motion animation, computer animation, and mixed media.

Early life and education

Peter Peake was born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England.[citation needed] He studied graphic design at Bath College of Higher Education, where he developed an interest in animation and visual storytelling.[citation needed]

After graduating in the early 1990s, he began working with Aardman Animations in 1992 as a freelance animator and director.[citation needed]

Career

Early work

Peake began his career working on television commercials and as a key animator on projects produced by Aardman Animations. His early credits include key animation on A Close Shave and work on the first series of Rex the Runt.[citation needed]

Short films

Peake directed the short film Pib & Pog (1994). The film received the McLaren Award for Best New British Animation at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Short Animation.[citation needed]

His later short film Humdrum (1998) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Short Animation.[1]

Television work

In the early 2000s, Peake expanded into television production. He wrote and directed the pilot episode of Captain Sarcastic for Channel 4 and directed episodes of Rex the Runt series two.[citation needed]

He also directed additional Pib & Pog shorts released in 2006 and created the online animated series JellyBeats (2008).[citation needed]

Robbie the Reindeer

In 2002, Peake directed Robbie the Reindeer II: Legend of the Lost Tribe, a stop-motion television special produced for Comic Relief and BBC Worldwide. The production featured voice performances by actors including Jeff Goldblum, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, and David Attenborough. The programme won the International Emmy Award for Best Children and Young People’s Programme in 2003.[citation needed]

Later work

Peake directed the animated short Pythagasaurus (2011), produced within Aardman’s commercials department.

He began work on the short film Take Rabbit in 2015. The film was completed in 2017 and features voice performances by actors including Matt Berry, Amelia Bullmore, Stephen Graham, and Steve Pemberton.[citation needed] It received the McLaren Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2018.[citation needed]

Commercial and charity projects

Peake has directed advertising campaigns for companies including Coca-Cola, Hotels.com, and Pringles.[citation needed]

He has also directed animated films for organisations including Save the Children and the Born Free Foundation.[citation needed]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he directed Creature Discomforts: Life in Lockdown, an animated short produced using remotely recorded interviews.[citation needed]
