Oren Shmuel is a choreographer and instructor of Israeli folk dances, who has been involved in the field since the late 1980s. He has choreographed over 80 Israeli folk dances, which have been taught and danced in Israel and around the world.[2]

Early life

Shmuel was born in Nahariya, Israel.[3] As a teenager, he danced with the Hora Nahariya ensemble.[4][3] During his military service,[5] he completed the Israeli Folk Dance Instructors' Course in Haifa under Yonatan Gabay, graduating in 1992.[4] He began choreographing folk dances in 1988.[4]

Career

In the early 1990s, Shmuel led folk dance sessions in northern Israel. In 1993, he founded the youth folk dance ensemble Noar 93 in Shlomi, acting as its artistic director and choreographer.[3][5][6]

Festivals and competitions

Shmuel's choreographies were entered in competitions at the Karmiel Dance Festival from the 1990s onward. A 2023 article in Rokdim listed several of his early competition entries, including "Shir Le'Aco" (1995), "Cheirut" (1996), "Medaber Beli Milim" and "Neginat Ha'Amel" (1997), and "Dayenu" (1998).[7]

At the 1996 Karmiel Dance Festival, Shmuel placed second in an improvisation competition.[8]

In 2003, Shmuel produced the "Young Creator" segment at the Karmiel Dance Festival. In 2012, the festival programme listed a creator's workshop titled "20 Years of Creation – Oren Shmuel". [9][10]

In 2025, he was a guest creator at the Ashdodance International Dance Festival, where he led the premiere workshop "Wondrous Rose".[11]

International activity

From the mid-1990s, Shmuel taught Israeli folk dance outside Israel. In 1995, he undertook a teaching tour in the United Kingdom for the Israel Folk Dance Institute. [12] In 1997, he participated as a dance leader at the international Machol Europa seminar in Bedford, England, which was covered by The Jewish Chronicle [13]

He continued to teach abroad in the following years, including seminars in Bern, Switzerland, in 1999 and 2000. [14] [15] In 2001, he taught at the Sababa Festival in New York and at Danse Montréal in Canada. [16] [17] In 2003, he taught Israeli folk dance in Melbourne, Australia, [18] and in 2005 he taught at a seminar in Munich, Germany. [19]
