Nico Ros is a Swiss structural engineer and entrepreneur. He is a partner of the Basel-based engineering firm ZPF Ingenieure.[1] At ZPF, he has worked on structural design for buildings such as the VitraHaus in Weil am Rhein, Germany,[2] and the HORTUS office building in Allschwil, Switzerland.[3] He is a co-founder, chief tehcnology officer (CTO), and chairman of the pharmaceutical supply chain company SkyCell.[4][5][6][7]

Early life and education

Ros trained as a carpenter before he studied at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW).[8][1][9] He graduated with distinction, receiving a diploma in civil engineering.[1] He also studied economics at the University of Fribourg.[9]

Ros joined ZPF Ingenieure in 2003 during his civil engineering studies. In 2009, he became a partner and member of the management board.[9][1] He currently serves on the board of directors.[10] His work at ZPF focuses on structural design and ecological performance.[1][9]

Projects that Ros worked on include the VitraHaus in Weil am Rhein, Germany, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and completed in 2010.[2] He also worked on Kinderspital Zürich [de][11],the children's hospital in Zurich and HORTUS in Allschwil. For the HORTUS office building, he worked on a timber-and-clay floor system designed to provide a lower-emission subsititute to concrete.[3][1] He argued that construction could become much more environmentally friendly without hugely increased costs if the right preindustrial methods were studied.[3] The HORTUS office received the Swiss Arc Award 2025 in the work, production and infrastructure category.[12]

Ros was also the client and a member of the structural engineering team for the Movable House in Riehen, designed by Rahbaran Hürzeler Architekten and completed in 2018.[13][14] He commissioned the house as an experiment in creating a dwelling that could, in principle, be dismantled and transported to another site.[13][15]

Sustainability work

As a member of ZPF, Ros initiated the development of (and served as an advisor to) EcoTool, a free web tool that is used to estimate the environmental impact of a building design in its early stages. The tool was developed with the property office of the canton of Basel-stadt.[16][17] He also co-founded ReMatter, a company that manufactures timber-clay elements to replace reinforced concrete.[18]

SkyCell

In partnership with Richard Ettl, Ros co-founded SkyCell in 2012, developing a hybrid shipping container for temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products.[4][19] He now serves as CTO and chairman of the board.[7][6]

Ros has been named as an inventor on patents for temperature-controlled containers and monitoring hardware.[20][21]

Personal Life

Ros lives in the Movable House in Riehen, an experimental house engineered by his own firm ZPF that was completed in 2018.[13][8]
