Nicholas Colia is an American filmmaker, writer, and director based in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his feature directorial debut Griffin in Summer (2024), which premiered at the Tribeca Festival.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Colia is originally from Massachusetts. As a teenager he directed stage farces and student film remakes.[2]

He studied theater and film at Sarah Lawrence College and directing at the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. Before graduate school he worked as an assistant director off-Broadway and at the O'Neill.[2]

He received an MFA from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Film program, where he received the Martin Scorsese Scholarship and the Maurice Kanbar Scholarship.[3][4]

Career

[edit]

While at NYU, Colia directed short films including Alex and the Handyman (2017) and Untitled Short Film About White People (2018). Alex and the Handyman received the National Board of Review Student Grant and first place in the graduate category at NYU’s First Run Film Festival; it screened at the Palm Springs International ShortFest and Outfest.[2][4] Untitled Short Film About White People won the Audience Award for Best Student Short at Palm Springs ShortFest.[4]

His first feature film, Griffin in Summer (2024), which he wrote and directed, is a coming-of-age comedy-drama starring Everett Blunck, Owen Teague, Melanie Lynskey, Kathryn Newton, and Abby Ryder Fortson. The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, where it received the Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature, the Best Screenplay award in the U.S. Narrative competition, and a Special Jury Mention for New Narrative Director.[1] Vertical Entertainment released the film in limited theaters on August 29, 2025; it later became available on Hulu.[3]

Colia was nominated for the Someone to Watch Award at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards for his work on the film.[5] In November 2024 he signed with the Buchwald agency for representation.[4]
