Naoya Zenin (Japanese: 禪院直哉 Hepburn: Zen'in Naoya) is a fictional character and a major antagonist of the Culling games arc in Jujutsu Kaisen, created by Gege Akutamki. Naoya Zenin is shown as a powerful and arrogant Jujutsu sorcerer, using projection sorcery throughout his time in the series. he acquires this cursed technique through his genetic relation with the Zenin clan. Despite only appearing around 17 chapters in the series, he serves as a major role in the character development of Maki Zenin, in who he shares a hostile relationship with, Despite being raised in the same clan.
From the appearances we see in the series, Naoya is often portrayed as misogynistic, meritocratic, and self righteous. We see this trait through multiple scenes from the anime adaption and the original manga, prioritizing the male side of the clan and actively undermining the freedoms of women. This serves as a major role in his character, leading to the characters death as his words and actions catch up to him.
In the anime adaptation of the manga (sharing the same name as the book: Jujutsu Kaisen), Naoya Zenin is voiced in japanese by Kōji Yusa, and voiced by Alan Lee in the english dub.
Concept
[edit]Naoya was written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. The name Naoya is commonly associated with and can even translate to honesty, improvement, and mending. His surname, Zenin, can be translated to zen temple, although unlikely, the traditions of the clan may roughly align with this translation. Interestingly, neither of these names align with his ideals or his environment, this had led some to believe it to be a sarcastic or even mocking detail done by the author.
Physical Appearance
[edit]The author's purpose behind naoya's physical appearance aligns with his traditional misogynistic ideals, despite this, naoya is portrayed with often stereotypical feminine dressing regulars, such as earrings, and potential eye liner. another once again, potential sarcastic detail intentionally done by Gege Akutami to traits of hypocrisy, some fans theorize because of this that his entire character all together is a mockery of people like him.[1]
Sorcery projection
[edit]Sorcery projection is the Cursed technique that naoya acquired through his blood relation with the Zenin clan, his father Naobito Zenin, also shared this technique. The technique allows the user to plan out their next course of movement by 24 frames every second, allowing them to accelerate at great speeds, and making them extremely hard to beat in hand to hand combat unless you understand the technique.[1]
Technique Limitation
[edit]- The movements they set must be within the users line of sight.
- Once a frame is placed, the user cannot change their course of movement.
- If the action of the 24 frames breaks the laws of physics on a extreme level, the user will be frozen for one second.
