Ming-Huang Lin (Chinese: 林銘煌) is a Taiwanese industrial designer and academic, currently serving as the Dean of the College of Design and Professor in the Department of Design at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech).[1]. He previously served as the Director of the Institute of Applied Arts at National Chiao Tung University and Chair of the Department of Design at Taiwan Tech. His research and practice encompass product semantics, form and cognition, virtual reality-assisted industrial design (VR), parametric design, service design, and materials and design[2]
Early life and career
[edit]Lin graduated at the top of his class from the Department of Industrial Design at Ming Chi Institute of Technology. He subsequently pursued studies in Europe, earning a Master of Arts in Design Leadership from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (UIAH, now Aalto University) in Finland.
Upon returning to Taiwan, Lin entered industrial practice, working as a product designer for Panasonic Taiwan, Ying Fang Home Furnishings, and ITI Co., Ltd. beginning in 1988. In 1993, he began teaching as a lecturer in the Department of Industrial Design at Chang Gung University. He later pursued further studies in the United Kingdom, obtaining a PhD in Design Products from the Royal College of Art (RCA).
In 1999, Lin joined the Department of Industrial and Commercial Design at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology as an assistant professor. In 2005, he moved to the Institute of Applied Arts at National Chiao Tung University, where he served as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor, before being promoted to full Professor in 2012; he also served as Institute Director from 2013 to 2016. In 2018, he returned to Taiwan Tech as a professor in the Department of Design, served as Department Chair from 2020 to 2022, and was appointed Dean of the College of Design in 2024.[1]
Research and design areas
[edit]Lin's academic work focuses on design theory, methodology, and the integration of emerging technologies:
- Product Design & Industrial Design
- Focuses on the development of contemporary consumer products and innovative mechanisms by integrating industry experience with aesthetic principles, actively leading industry-university cooperative projects with major brands in consumer electronics, environmental design, and home appliances.[3][4]
- Product Semantics
- Investigates how visual symbols, affordances, and cultural connotations convey functional and cognitive meaning to users.
- Form and Cognition
- Studies form grammar, visual perception, and the cognitive processes through which users interpret morphological features.
- VR-assisted Industrial Design
- Applies virtual reality (VR) tools to 3D modeling, spatial evaluation, and collaborative immersive design workflows.
- Parametric Design
- Utilizes algorithmic and parametric modeling to generate complex geometries and explore digital fabrication techniques.
- Service Design
- Employs human-centered methodologies to design user experiences, touchpoints, and systematic service frameworks.
- Materials and Design
- Examines the relationships between material textures, manufacturing processes, and product form expression.
