Early Life and Education
[edit]Michael Halflants is a Belgian-American architect and educator based in Florida.[1] He studied architecture at the Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in Brussels before earning a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Florida.[2] While at the University of Florida, he received the Henry Adams Medal, awarded annually to the top graduating architecture student.[3]
Professional Career
[edit]After graduating, Halflants worked at the Polshek Partnership in New York City, where he participated in cultural and institutional projects including work related to the Brooklyn Museum and the Public Theater.[4]
In 2006, he co-founded Halflants + Pichette, an architecture firm based in Sarasota and Tampa, Florida.[5] The firm's work focuses primarily on residential architecture in subtropical and coastal environments.[6]
Halflants was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2021.[7]
Academic Career
[edit]Halflants joined the University of South Florida School of Architecture and Community Design in 2002, where he became a professor of architecture and later served as associate director of the program.[8]
His teaching has focused on graduate-level design studios addressing tropical architecture, housing, and urbanism.[9] He has also led international study programs for architecture students in Latin America, Europe, and Asia.[10]
Lectures and Public Engagement
[edit]Halflants has delivered lectures and participated in conferences on architecture, housing, and urbanism in cities including Bogotá, Singapore, Jakarta, and Bangkok. He has also presented at American Institute of Architects conventions in the United States and Puerto Rico.[11]
He previously served as chair of the Sarasota City Planning Board.[12] Halflants also co-organized 10×10, a Sarasota-based public design forum focused on art, architecture, and community issues.[13]
Honors and Recognition
[edit]Halflants received the Florida/Caribbean AIA McMinn Award in 2010 for contributions to architectural education.[14]
In 2018, Halflants + Pichette received the AIA Florida Medal of Honor for Design.[15]
In 2021, Halflants was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA).[16]
