MapleStory Universe (often abbreviated MSU) is a blockchain-based gaming ecosystem developed by NEXPACE, an Abu Dhabi-based subsidiary of South Korean video game publisher Nexon.
The platform extends the intellectual property of MapleStory into a Web3 environment. Players can own and trade in-game items as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Henesys, a custom blockchain built on Avalanche[1]. The platform's first game, MapleStory N, launched on 15 May 2025 alongside its native cryptocurrency token, NXPC.[1]
History
[edit]MapleStory Universe was first announced by Nexon at the Game Developers Conference in March 2023, originally planned to launch on Polygon as its chosen blockchain infrastructure.[2][3] In March 2024, Nexon announced that the project would migrate from Polygon to a custom Avalanche blockchain,[4] following the discontinuation of Polygon Edge tooling.[5]
Nexon's blockchain operations were established as a UAE subsidiary, NEXPACE, headquartered in Abu Dhabi.[6] Nexon had formed Nexon Universe Global and NEXPACE in the UAE in 2023, as part of a broader strategy to expand its blockchain initiatives.[6] In media reports, NEXPACE chief operating officer Keith Kim said the team had relocated from Korea to Abu Dhabi after searching for the "most clearly regulated place in the world", citing the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) as the rationale.[7] CEO Sunyoung Hwang, described the company's Abu Dhabi presence as "rooted in long-term strategic orientation".[8]
MapleStory N and the NXPC token launched simultaneously on 15 May 2025.[1]
Platform
[edit]MapleStory Universe is structured around a custom Layer 1 blockchain built using Avalanche subnet technology (AvaCloud).[1] The platform's first game is MapleStory N, a PC-based MMORPG that retains the 2D side-scrolling combat and progression of the original MapleStory, while introducing item ownership and a fixed-supply item economy enabled by blockchain technology, in which limited-quantity NFT items are obtainable through gameplay rather than direct purchase.[5][2]
The platform uses a dual-token model: NXPC, the native cryptocurrency token, and NESO, an in-game currency earned through play. NXPC is used for in-game functions including item crafting, NFT creation, and player rewards, with issuance and supply limits intended to mirror real-world economic principles.[5]
In 2026, NEXPACE launched developer tooling that allowed access to gameplay and behavioural data of MapleStory N. It also streamlined intellectual property licensing, revenue settlement, and payments into a single system[9]. Utilising artificial intelligence, creators are able to generate MapleStory-inspired games and content through simple prompts[10].
NXPC token
[edit]NXPC is the native utility token of MapleStory Universe. The token's primary functions are item crafting, NFT creation and player rewards within the platform.[5]
NXPC was listed on multiple major cryptocurrency exchanges at launch on 15 May 2025, including Binance, Bybit, Upbit and Bithumb. The token traded at approximately US$2.31 on Binance on 18 May 2025.[5] The simultaneous multi-exchange listing was reported as a reflection of high market expectations for the launch.[5]
Reception and adoption
[edit]The launch was framed in terms of NEXPACE's strategy of using the original MapleStory user base to drive blockchain adoption.[11]
Industry observers viewed Nexon's blockchain entry as significant given the company's three-decade legacy in the South Korean gaming industry, and noted that NEXPACE's approach was distinguished from earlier play-to-earn projects by being "built on a proven IP and solid gameplay foundation".[11]
Following its May 2025 launch, MapleStory N faced an influx of bots and hackers. Players reported lobbies filled with bot accounts auto-farming resources, and one incident of an exploit allowing a single player to defeat a high-tier boss, which ordinarily required a full party, circulated widely on social media.
In response, NEXPACE implemented a 30-hour delay on asset withdrawals, which corresponds to the average time between an abuse incident and a ban. The developer also disclosed a clawback mechanism, subject to multi-signature authorisation and community consultation, allowing frozen assets held in banned wallets to be returned to the players.[12]
As of June 2026, MapleStory Universe has logged about US$31 million in revenue[10], more than 150 million cumulative transactions and surpassed 3.82 million accounts registered since its launch in May 2025. To date, it accounts for 23.3 percent of total activity on the Avalanche network[9].
As of the launch and continuing thereafter, MapleStory N has not been available in South Korea due to domestic regulations restricting play-to-earn games.[5]
