M/S Erika Dan [ Call sign OXDY] was a Danish Cargo-passenger ship from 1958 - 1973[1]

Construction

Construction on Hull number 604 [M/S Erika Dan] began in 1957. She was built at Werft Nobiskrug, Rendsburg West Germany[1] for the Danish shipping company J. Lauritzen A/S She was launched and Christened on the 21st of January 1958 by Mrs J. Houston Jackson By April 11th 1958 she was fitted out and handed over to J. Lauritzen A/S

Basic Information

M/S Erika Dan was the last of 3 Sister ships [M/S Anita Dan 1956 M/S Frida Dan 1957] she had a length of 82.3 Meters and a Beam of 14 Meters. She could carry between 12-36 Passengers. M/S Erika Dan had a Net tonnage of 1,333 and a Gross tonnage of 2,648. Her Home port was Esbjerg. She had a speed of 14 Knots[1]

Career

The surviving sources do not provide a complete year by year record of M/S Erika Dan's voyages. The following chronology therefore lists documented voyages and activities where reliable evidence is available.

1958

April 11th The M/S Erika Dan is on trials and handed over to J. Lauritzen A/S[1]

On September 18th the M/S Erika Dan ran aground off Hanko, Finland[2]

1959

November 14th. M/S Erika Dan sailed to Antwerp

November 18th At Antwerp she is chartered for a Belgian trip to Antarctica

1960

January the M/S Erika Dan is still on her trip to Antarctica

March 12th she arrives at Brussels

December the M/S Erika Dan was chartered for another Belgian trip to Antarctica, She left Zeebrugge on the 10th of December

1961

January 9th M/S Erika Dan reaches Breid Bay

January / February Sources say she either departed on the 29th of January, or the 2nd of February

1962

January - April the M/S Erika Dan is doing Sea scientific and oceanographic work in the north Atlantic Ocean/Labrador Sea

May 1st The M/S Erika Dan was put on a Bareboat charter to the Kongelige Grønlandske Handel (KGH) - This Charter lasted until 1972, Images from this period show her funnel and mast/booms painted yellow.

1963

Still Chartered by KGH. Not much else is known

1964

Transporting cargo to Thule Base Greenland. Along the way the voyage got delayed due to heavy ice. a U.S Icebreaker came to assist with clearing the ice.

1965-71

Erika Dan remained on bareboat charter to the KGH Continuing her service in Greenland

1972

The KGH Bareboat charter comes to a end. Not much else is known

1973

the M/S Erika Dan is sold to a United Arab Emirates based Shipping Company and Renamed Al Riaz[3][1] - Ending her Danish Career

1974 Loss

On the 5th of January 1974 the Al Riaz Foundered at sea north of Vigo Spain, at approximately 44°37′N, 8°54′W.[1]

Apparently this was because her engine room flooded due to a gale[1][3]
