From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lobyco is a Danish software company that develops a white-label customer loyalty, promotions, and checkout platform for retailers. Headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, the company grew out of an internal digital transformation project at the grocery cooperative Coop Danmark before being spun out as an independent business in 2020. Although its platform was originally built for grocery retail, Lobyco has since become a vertical-agnostic provider. Its software is made for grocery, convenience, fuel, quick-service restaurant, pharmacy, and DIY and hardware retailers, and is used by retailers in Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region.[1][2][3]

History

[edit]

Lobyco's technology originated inside Coop Danmark, Denmark's largest retail cooperative, as part of a broader effort to modernise its membership programme and build a digital ecosystem connecting its stores, app, and payment systems. The resulting Coop app grew to reach roughly a quarter of Danish households and around 1.8 million users, with app users visiting more often and spending more than non-app customers.[2][4]

In 2020, the platform was spun out of Coop Danmark into Lobyco, an independent company that continued to serve Coop while offering its software to other retailers.[3][5] Since then, Lobyco has expanded internationally through partnerships with grocery and retail groups outside Denmark. In the United Kingdom, its clients include Southern Co-op, which operates more than 300 food, funeral, and coffee shop branches across southern England,[6] and Our Co-op, a group of independent co-operative societies operating more than 270 stores, including petrol stations, across 19 counties.[7] Elsewhere, Lobyco's clients include the Channel Islands Co-operative Society, a member-owned retailer with more than 120,000 members operating food, pharmacy, and fuel outlets across the Channel Islands;[8] Foodstuffs New Zealand, which adopted the platform to rebuild the Clubcard loyalty programme used across its New World supermarkets;[9] Australian United Retailers, a network of more than 550 independently owned supermarkets and other stores in Australia, which signed a five-year agreement covering loyalty and promotions for its FoodWorks, Farmer Jack's, and LiquorWorks banners;[10] Calgary Co-op in Canada;[11] and Union Coop, one of the largest consumer cooperatives in the United Arab Emirates, which relaunched its Tamayaz loyalty programme on the Lobyco platform in 2025.[12] Alongside this geographic expansion, the company has broadened its client base beyond its original grocery focus to include convenience stores and fuel retailers.[1]

Platform and services

[edit]

Lobyco provides a software-as-a-service platform that retailers use under their own brand rather than Lobyco's. The platform covers customer loyalty and membership schemes, personalised and location-based promotions, and checkout-related features such as scan-and-pay and prepaid in-store accounts, along with the data and analytics retailers use to plan purchasing and marketing around customer behaviour.[1][3] Beyond its original grocery base, the platform is in active use by convenience and fuel retailers, and is also designed to serve quick-service restaurant, health and beauty, DIY and hardware, and pharmacy retailers.[1] Its systems hold PCI-DSS, ISAE, and MACH certifications relevant to payment security and software architecture.[3]

Operations

[edit]

Lobyco is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, and employs roughly 150 people.[5][13] The company operates as an independent, retailer-owned software vendor rather than a division of any single retail chain, with a client base spanning grocery and general retail groups across Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region.[10]
