Jeddah Municipality (Arabic: أمانة محافظة جدة) is the municipal authority responsible for local government administration, urban planning, public services, environmental health, and infrastructure development in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The municipality operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing and is responsible for implementing municipal regulations and development projects within the governorate.[1]

The municipality has overseen a number of urban development, environmental, and infrastructure projects aimed at improving public services and enhancing the urban environment in Jeddah.[2]

Jeddah is the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia after Riyadh and serves as the principal gateway to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.[3]

History

[edit]

The administration of municipal affairs in Jeddah dates back to the late Ottoman period, when local services and public administration were supervised by officials responsible for maintaining public order and municipal functions. Over time, municipal administration evolved into a modern local government authority responsible for urban planning, infrastructure development, environmental services, and public facilities.[4]

In the modern era, Jeddah Municipality has played a significant role in the expansion and development of the city through infrastructure projects, public service initiatives, and waterfront development programs.[5]

Responsibilities

[edit]

Jeddah Municipality is responsible for the administration and regulation of municipal affairs within Jeddah Governorate. Its responsibilities include urban planning, municipal licensing, environmental health, waste management, infrastructure maintenance, public parks, and beautification projects.

The municipality also supervises construction permits, commercial licenses, public sanitation programs, and the implementation of local regulations related to public services and urban development.[6]

The municipality has overseen a number of infrastructure and waterfront development projects designed to improve public services and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors.[7]

Leadership

[edit]

Jeddah Municipality is headed by the Mayor of Jeddah, who oversees municipal administration, development projects, and public services throughout the governorate.

The current mayor is Saleh Ali Al-Turki, who was appointed in 2018.[8]

Among previous mayors was Hani Mohammed Abu Ras, who served until 2018.[9]

Madinati Platform

[edit]

The Madinati Platform is a digital platform launched under the supervision of Jeddah Municipality to support the monitoring and management of waste collection and transportation operations. The platform enables the tracking of waste transport activities and assists municipal authorities in monitoring compliance with environmental and operational regulations.[10]
