This document describes the process of the launch of the iPhone in South Korea and the resulting changes in the country. The iPhone faced many twists and turns before its release in South Korea. Furthermore, various suspicions and conspiracy theories were raised during this process. South Korean mobile carriers were skeptical about the activation of smartphones due to concerns such as a decrease in data revenue caused by the iPhone; consequently, the suppressed desires of consumers exploded with the launch of the iPhone, leading to assessments that it brought about significant changes in South Korea's smartphone and IT sectors.[1][2]
Launch Process (2007-2009)
[edit]Abolish the application of compulsory wippies
[edit]
From the time Apple first announced the iPhone in January 2007, South Korea was excluded from the list of countries where it was released, and the biggest reason was the system that made it mandatory to apply WIPI to all mobile phones. This has been pointed out as a barrier to entry not only for iPhones but also for foreign mobile phone companies. [3] The system, which was created with the aim of inefficient use of different platforms for each mobile phone manufacturer, reducing software development costs, and protecting mobile phone and content companies in the country, was abolished 2009 April 1 according to [3] indicating that the purpose was achieved and that consumers' options were limited.[4]
Negotiation process and launch
[edit]Since then, negotiations for the introduction of the iPhone have been actively conducted around KT, but they have been postponed frequently due to various conditions such as subsidies, price plans,[5] and wireless Internet opening services demanded by Apple.[6] As a result, the nickname "Next Month's Phone" was sometimes born.[7] Some early adopters, who couldn't wait for the iPhone to be released, even authenticate and open their own iPhones purchased overseas after the iPhone's EM authentication.[8]
As rumors continued regarding the launch of the iPhone, KT feared overheating, saying, "Please don't expect too much about the iPhone."[9] With the release being postponed, "KCC(Korea Communications Commission) is preventing the iPhone from being released."[10] Some argued that domestic mobile carriers whose data call fee income is decreasing and domestic mobile phone companies whose sales are expected to decrease are blocking the introduction of iPhones.[11] In fact, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman [Lee Jae-yong asked SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won to "hold the introduction of the iPhone," and SK Telecom was found to have postponed the introduction of the iPhone accordingly.[12] It is also accepted as an open fact that telecommunication companies also tried to curb the launch of these smartphones as much as possible because they were worried that the data revenue from the launch of the iPhone would decrease. .[13] KT Chairman Lee Seok-chae later said in an email sent to in-house staff, "We introduced innovative iPhones, but we didn't expect the two conglomerates to come up with such a strong deterrent," and said that Korean conglomerates blocked the introduction of iPhones. [14]
After many twists and turns, negotiations proceeded quickly in September 2009, and news broke that the launch was imminent.[15] Since then, negotiations have been completely agreed, and KT has received a sales reservation on November 22 and officially released it on November 28. [16] On the first day of its introduction, hundreds of people lined up all night to receive iPhones and became a hot topic of conversation. [17] However, there was a little confusion in the launch process, and there was a disturbance in which KT apologized. KT started pre-ordering on November 22, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. through its own phone store. [18] At first, KT said in its announcement, "It can be delivered sequentially from November 28th," but on official Twitter operated by KT, "You can receive it from November 28th," and related websites were temporarily down due to the confusion of people who wanted to apply for iPhones. In addition, KT's delivery was partially delayed due to a shortage of personnel during the delivery process. Therefore, some buyers visited the post office directly to receive it. [19] As such criticism grew, KT issued an apology through the announcement section of the phone store website. [20]Since then, it has announced a compensation plan that will provide 500MB of wireless data every month for free for all iPhone reservations at the phone store for three months. [21]
SK Telecom and LGU+
[edit]SK Telecom, which had been introducing the iPhone since KT launched, is believed to have given up the introduction due to a lack of agreement in negotiations with Apple, but SK Telecom said, "We are still discussing with Apple and have not decided whether to introduce it or not." [22] It is analyzed that SK Telecom is very unlikely to introduce an iPhone due to its relationship with Samsung, and SK Telecom is continuously spreading rumors of introduction to prevent the outflow of subscribers from the iPhone. [23] However, since the iPhone was not introduced for two years [24], SK Telecom has been talking about the possibility of opening an iPhone with SK Telecom by exchanging USIM cards, and some users actually opened the iPhone in this way. [25] Since then, negotiations between Apple and SK Telecom have progressed, and on February 24, 2011, SK Telecom announced that it will launch the iPhone from March. [26] On the other hand, LG U+ uses its own K-PCS frequency method, so it is not a third-generation mobile communication method (W-CDMA) provided by other mobile carriers such as SK Telecom and KT, but a unique communication method that the iPhone does not support (CDMA 2000 EV‑DO) The deployment itself was impossible because the service was provided in Revision A. However, since July 2013, LG U+ has completely excluded 3G CDMA from LTE devices and will only provide GSM devices that operate 100% LTE only. In other words, since voice calls are processed with 100% VoLTE, there is no problem with the communication method of voice calls. With VoLTE support for iPhone 6 and later, LG U+ will be able to release iPhones, and on October 31, 2014, three major carriers will be able to release iPhones at the same time.
Sales volume and impact after launch
[edit]Right after the release
[edit]
As soon as the iPhone was released in Korea, it caused a big stir, and even though it was an expensive smartphone, it recorded a large number of sales in a short period of time. The number of pre-release reservations reached 40,000 to 60,000 [27] Sales exceeded 100,000 units in the 10th day of release. [28] This is much more than the total sales of Omnia II, which exceeded 70,000 units in a month after its release. [29] With the release of the iPhone, there were cases where subscribers of other telecommunication businesses left, but SK Telecom left the company the most. [30]
The response of competitors
[edit]Apple's competitors Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics also lowered smartphone prices such as Omnia2 to compete with iPhones, and KT's competitor SK Telecom also raised subsidies for other smartphones, Samsung's Omnia2 model was cheaper than Haptic AMOLED, which caused a backlash between haptic users and Omnia2 buyers who bought it before raising subsidies.[31] Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics also launched a smartphone equipped with Google's Android OS, which triggered a full-fledged smartphone competition. [32] With the iPhone gaining popularity, SK Telecom and Samsung became a hot topic among netizens by parodying the comedy show 'Gag Concert' segment 'Nam Bowon' and distributing UCC that disparages iPhone and emphasizes Omnia's performance. [33] SK Telecom is open to recruit part-time iPhone comments. [34] For Samsung, which accounts for a large portion of its advertising revenue, Korean media posted a large number of articles criticizing the iPhone. [35][36] Competitive mobile phone manufacturers and telecommunications companies sometimes came up with omnidirectional iPhone defense measures. In addition, mobile phone store staff often recommended Omnia to those who came to buy iPhones because Samsung provided more than 100,000 won in subsidies to sellers when selling Omnia. Some pointed out that this eventually leads to a price bubble, and that it will compete in the distribution network rather than quality. [37] At that time, criticism was raised about the advertisement and performance of Omnia announced by Samsung. At that time, Omnia posted advertisements that it was superior to iPhones by emphasizing incidental items such as "Can you touch it with your nails," "Do you have a camera flash," "Is it an interchangeable battery?" and "Can you use DMB?" Although sales of Omnia increased due to such marketing, users who were later disappointed with Omnia's performance protested Samsung's hype or refusal to update the OS and demanded compensation sales or filed a collective lawsuit against Samsung. Some users who switched to anti-government called "omnia" "omuregi" by combining it with "mash". [38] In addition, the president of Samsung Electronics ignored the popularity of the iPhone, saying, "As the number of excessive netizens increased and interest increased excessively, unnecessary people bought it and sold it further." [39] Nevertheless, portal sites Daum [40], Doosan [41], [[:ko:진보신당|The New Progressive Party] [42], KTH [43], and Oh My News [44] sometimes provided or selected iPhone to all or some employees.
Discord between KT and Samsung Electronics
[edit]Since the introduction of the iPhone, discord has begun to arise between KT and Samsung Electronics. With the launch of the iPhone, Samsung has been hit by sales and images in the smartphone sector, including a satisfaction survey of Omnia2, Samsung's leading smartphone [45] In the smartphone preference survey, Samsung lagged behind Apple and suffered humiliation. [46] As a result, Samsung did not hide its discomfort with KT, and KT was excluded from Samsung's launch of various smartphones or excluded from subsidies. [47] Upgrade not performed or [48] Furthermore, even the name "Showmonia" is no longer available. [49] Samsung's discrimination against KT has begun. KT became an opportunity to exert great influence on the release of the iPhone, but it faced a crisis that it would be difficult to secure Korean smartphones smoothly due to discord with Samsung, the largest mobile phone manufacturer in Korea. Since then, Samsung's Galaxy smartphone series released through SK Telecom has also been released by KT more than a few months later, and it is said that KT has no plans to release Wave 2 equipped with Samsung's "Bada" operating system. [49][50] Separately, Wavve 3 was successfully released to KT.
Regarding KT's discrimination from Samsung, the IT industry analyzed, "KT is being persecuted for ignoring the implicitly agreed smartphone neglect strategy between domestic mobile phone devices and telecommunication service companies and biting the forbidden fruit of iPhone." [51] KT Chairman Lee Seok-chae expressed displeasure with Samsung, saying, "Don't have feelings when you run a company" or prohibiting the use of the name "Shoomnia" by saying, "Shoomnia is like Hong Gil-dong, who can't call his father a father." [52][53] The discord between Samsung and KT ended when SK Telecom launched the iPhone in March 2011.
Meanwhile, Samsung, which has been humiliated by the iPhone in the smartphone sector, has maintained closer cooperation with SK Telecom, and SK Telecom launched a counterattack to regain the initiative lost on the iPhone by releasing 10 smartphones in the second quarter of 2010.[54]
Subsequent sales volume
[edit]In May 2010, the iPhone sold over 700,000 units. It took 27 days to sell 100,000 units from 500,000 to 600,000 units, but it took 25 days to exceed 600,000 to 700,000 units, indicating that sales growth has accelerated. [55] Despite KT's lack of active marketing, the reason for the increase in sales speed is attributed to the spread of word of mouth due to the active use of existing users. [56] In October 2010, it exceeded 1 million units. [57] In November 2010, the total number of subscribers reached 1.62 million. [58] Since then, iPhone 4 has been released, and iPhone sales have continued to increase, with cumulative sales exceeding 2 million units on January 23, 2011. [59] Thanks to iPhone's popularity, Apple Korea's sales also jumped more than 10 times compared to 2009, earning 1.5 trillion won to 2 trillion won. [60]
Challenges posed to Korea
[edit]The Cause of iPhone's Popularity
[edit]
The act of Korean mobile phone carriers trying to make excessive profits by driving only their short-term profits, intervening in the manufacturing process, eliminating Wi‑Fi, and inducing paid wireless Internet connections.[61] Due to the policy of deleting the function of lowering profits, there is a continuous specification reduction controversy compared to products sold overseas. [62] However, the prevailing analysis is that the iPhone gained great popularity because it was released with the same specs as the model released in the global market away from the influence of telecommunication companies. Hwang Sang-min, a psychology professor at Yonsei University, analyzed, "In that it has enabled Internet access through mobile phones that Internet users have wanted most so far, enthusiastic support for iPhones is rather natural." [63] It is also analyzed that the so-called convergence feature phone functions such as the number of pixels of the camera and MP3 player functions have reached their limit, and consumers have been reluctant to use smartphones, which has been suppressed and exploded by the iPhone. [13]
Content and Specification Down
[edit]Only 5% of the profits returned to content creators from application prices provided by Korean mobile phone manufacturers and telecommunication businesses were not secured. [64] However, iPhone's profits returned to developers reached 70% and secured more than 200,000 contents, increasing sales volume, sparking an explosive response involving many producers in Korea. [65] Such diverse applications on the iPhone are considered the most popular cause of the iPhone. [66] In this regard, it was pointed out that Korean mobile phone carriers should not intentionally delete functions, but should focus on securing various contents. Due to these problems, even Samsung, which had the second largest share in the global mobile phone market before the iPhone was released, had only 2.8 percent of the smartphone market, and LG was not even able to enter the related market until 2009. [67]
Changes to Korea
[edit]Enabling the Wireless Internet
[edit]The biggest change is the change in wireless Internet, including Wi‑Fi. Korea, the world's leading Internet environment such as the speed and penetration rate of wired Internet, is promoting paid 3G Internet access by refusing to install Wi-Fi functions on mobile phones. [68] Therefore, users rarely use the wireless Internet, and Korea was humiliated as it was ranked lower in the wireless Internet environment level. [69] However, since the iPhone was launched, carriers have not been able to lag behind the iPhone's competitiveness, so they have expanded Wi‑Fi, which was only available on expensive smartphones, to ordinary mobile phones. [70] SK Telecom, Korea's top mobile phone subscriber share, has decided to expand its Wi‑Fi area to more than 10,000 locations by the end of 2010. [71] We decided to open our Wi‑Fi network to other companies. [72] KT announced that there were 16,50 Wi‑Fi zones when the iPhone was released, but it exceeded 27,000 in September 2010 and will increase it to 100,000 by 2011. [73] LG Telecom, which has the largest Internet phone share, announced plans to open 1.7 million AP (wireless Internet sharing devices) by offering discount benefits to MyLG070 users. [74] Competition in the wireless Internet environment has also intensified. In addition, the government has made a pledge to install Wi-Fi in order to create an environment where wireless Internet can be used by 1.5 trillion won[75] and to win the support of young people in the political world. [76] In addition, the wireless Internet fee plan has been changed in a variety of ways, and SKT released an unlimited wireless Internet fee plan in August 2010 and KT released an unlimited wireless Internet fee plan in September 2010. [77][78] Since investment and competition took place in this way, Korea's wireless Internet environment has improved rapidly. As a result, in July 2010, Korea reached the world's second largest number of wireless Internet subscribers per 100 subscribers. [79]
Revitalizing the Smartphone Market
[edit]Even the Omnia series, which was the No. 1 smartphone sales before the release of the iPhone in Korea, was small enough to sell only 70,000 units a month. [29] However, when the iPhone was released and gained great popularity, the mobile phone manufacturer hurriedly planned to release a new smartphone. [80] In 2010, SK Telecom launched 10 smartphones in the second quarter alone. [81] KT also announced that it will release 15 smartphones within this year. [82] Samsung's Lee Kun-hee also visited the smartphone sector as soon as he returned to management. [83] Many smartphones that have since been released have been compared to iPhones, using the expression "opposite horse" depending on the media. [84][85] In addition, since smartphones were not popular in the Korean market until 2010, Korean mobile phone manufacturers, which had a low share of the global smartphone market, sometimes accelerated competition. [86][87] In particular, LG's slow response to smartphones affected stock prices and global market share. [88][89] In the end, smartphones became the biggest theme in IT, and smartphone sales in 2010 grew 8.5 times compared to 2009. [90] In March 2011, 16 months after the release of the iPhone, the era of smartphone distribution began in earnest with the era of 10 million smartphones. [91]
Activate the App Store
[edit]Korean mobile phone manufacturers and telecommunications companies have never operated Apple's open and cooperative app stores. However, the Korean mobile phone manufacturer, who recognized the importance of iPhone's numerous applications, decided to activate the App Store to secure content. [92] In addition, the three Korean mobile carriers have decided to operate Samsung and LG integrated app stores since June 2011. [93] Omnia, Samsung's representative smartphone, which was evaluated as second to iPhone in hardware, was also struggling because it was pointed out that it was inferior to iPhone in application and OS completeness, but Samsung's Galaxy S has strengthened its operating system and application parts with Android.
Template:참고 ActiveX showed the highest usage in the Korean web market and at the same time emerged as the biggest problem. Microsoft has also repeatedly expressed its negative stance on ActiveX. [94] However, due to the utilization rate of Internet Explorers exceeding 90%, Korea did not easily think of reforming ActiveX-related issues, and remained on the sidelines of raising the following issues. These problems are also directly related to the problem of Korean web standards. However, as soon as the iPhone that does not support ActiveX was released, demand for smartphones soared, which led to the issue of "web access being blocked by ActiveX in mobile environments," which led to ActiveX-related problems. [95] In the end, the government revised regulations on ActiveX, which provided an opportunity for the task related to ActiveX, which was a deep-rooted problem of the Korean web, to be resolved to some extent. In addition, while there are many websites that did not comply with web standards and operated normally only on Internet Explorer, the market share of a new web browser called Safari soared, affecting web standards for websites. [96][97] In addition, as the number of mobile Internet users increased with the spread of smartphones, many mobile-only websites were created. As a result, the government has begun to draft standards for mobile-only sites. [98]
Other
[edit]There were many other changes. Until then, there were few cases where mobile carriers or mobile phone manufacturers upgraded the software of the device after selling the device. However, Apple is continuously upgrading its software on older iPhones, which has received great support from consumers. In the end, Korean mobile phone manufacturers will also upgrade their software. It also brought about changes such as the establishment of a new mobile-based application business market and the increase in the use of mobile-only social network services as smartphones spread. [99] In addition, telecommunication companies in A's location have interfered with the manufacturer's functions and performance of mobile phones that are released in consideration of profitability, but Apple had to accept them because Apple kept all specifications secret and released them without consulting with the telecommunication company. Since then, other manufacturers have continued this trend, with the exception of some carrier applications, receiving little interference from mobile phone manufacturers. [100]
KT compares the introduction of the iPhone to Moon Ik-jeom, which brought in cotton seeds.[51]
Criticism and Problems
[edit]섬네일|right|220px|iPod Touch and iPhone Criticism and problems associated with the release of the iPhone are that it can be reduced to almost no sound when shooting the camera (after iPhone 4, camera shutter sound adjustment is limited by country, including Korea), and there is a concern that it will be used as a hidden camera (although this is a voluntary recommendation and not an obligation) [101]. Criticism has been raised over the violation of the Fair Trade Commission's terms and conditions, saying, 'If the customer requests it within 14 days of purchase, it can be refunded.' [102](This agreement was changed to 7th for KT and 14th for SK Telecom due to intensifying competition with KT due to the launch of iPhone 4] by SK Telecom in March 2011.[103]) In the initial product, defects occurred in various places such as SMS transmission and reception, location search service defects, and cracks, and some buyers demanded replacement. [104] Jailbreak, which operates the iPhone's operating system, is also frequently used to use applications and features that are not officially supported by the iPhone. Apple and KT claimed these actions were illegal and said, "Products that attempted hacking caused malfunction or failure cannot receive customer service,"[105] but a U.S. court ruled that escape from prison itself was not illegal. [106]
Apple's Refurbish Policy
[edit]Apple's refurbished policy is to replace faulty products with refurbished or new products one-on-one, but confusion has arisen over the post-refurbished service method. Although it has the advantage of being able to be replaced immediately, consumer complaints have been raised because the data used must be backed up separately, and free repairs cannot be made even within the warranty period after the specified number of exchanges. [107] A total of 412 smartphone-related complaints were received on the bulletin board of the Korea Consumer Agency, of which 207 were received on the iPhone, and the Korea Consumer Agency has begun internal review to see if there is any problem with Apple's customer service policy. [108] Some users who were dissatisfied with this service method had their iPhones repaired at an unofficial repair shop in Yongsan. Apple said it cannot replace products repaired by such unofficial repair shops. [109] Apple's refurbished policy has been applied in the global market since the iPod sales era, and it has been implemented for iPod products in Korea, but it has been applied for the first time as a mobile phone. Meanwhile, in September 2010, after the iPhone 4 was released, Apple Korea announced that it would partially change its A/S policy and repair displays, cameras, vibration motors, etc. instead of refurbishing them. Until now, it has cost between 290,000 won and up to 700,000 won to replace the refurbished product, but only 39,000 won to 79,000 won to repair it, greatly reducing the burden. [110]
Apple Pay Policy in South Korea
[edit]Apple was also trying to introduce Apple Pay, which is being implemented in other countries, to Korea. However, due to the different standards of NFC devices used in Korea and NFC devices for using Apple Pay, it is necessary to purchase a new Apple-only device that is different from the previous one to use Apple Pay. [111] The price of the device is about 150,000 won per unit, and Apple made the credit card company pay for it and demanded a 1% commission from the credit card company. However, from a credit card company's point of view, Samsung Pay and LG Pay did not receive fees and required hundreds of billions of won in spending to distribute devices worth about 150,000 won per unit, resulting in a failure in negotiations with Apple.
