Henry G. Waltemade was an American real estate professional who served as the President of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) in 1955. During his tenure, Waltemade played a key role in shaping the association's policies and initiatives, contributing to the growth and development of the real estate industry.
Early Life and Career
[edit]Before his real estate career, Waltemade worked in banking, leveraging his financial expertise to shape his approach to real estate. In 1926, he joined the family realty firm, H. Waltemade, Inc. Realtors, as secretary/treasurer and served as president of the company from 1938 to 1965.[3]
NAR President
[edit]Waltemade's presidency in 1955 marked an important period for the real estate industry, with the association focusing on issues such as ethics, education, and government affairs. His leadership helped shape the association's stance on key issues affecting real estate professionals.
During his presidency, an increased demand for housing occurred and a favorable economic climate prevailed. Waltemade attributed the demand to younger home buyers, the elderly maintaining separate households, more "elbow room" in the housing inventory, and consumer emphasis on quality and space.[3]
Controversy
[edit]The National Association of Realtors has a complex history, including involvement in racially restrictive practices in the early 20th century. In 1950, the NAR eliminated racially restrictive covenants from its code of ethics, but the effects of these practices persisted.
During the 1950s, the industry was also involved in debates about public housing and urban development, with many opposing government-sponsored initiatives citing concerns about government intervention in the private market. Waltemade supported private construction of affordable housing, aligning with the NAR's stance on private enterprise and limited government intervention.[4]
Personal Life and Death
[edit]Henry G. Waltemade was married to Jessica Waltemade. He passed away in 1985.[5]
Legacy
[edit]Henry G. Waltemade's legacy includes his involvement with Wartburg, which recently broke ground on the Waltemade Residence, a 102-unit affordable and supportive housing project for seniors in Mount Vernon, New York.[6] The project gives tribute to Waltemade and his wife Jeannette, whose bequest helped to establish the skilled nursing facility that previously occupied the building site.[7]
