Habib Benali is an Algeria-born Canadian scientist specializing in computational neuroimaging, brain connectivity, and quantitative biomarkers of neurodegeneration. He is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University[1][2], where he holds a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Imaging and Healthy Aging[3][2]. He is also Director of the BHealthyAge Laboratory at Concordia University[4] and is one of the researchers in charge of the Neuroscience of Aging research theme at the Centre de recherche de l'Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (CRIUGM), Université de Montréal[5].

Benali's research focuses on computational methods for multimodal brain imaging, neuroinformatics, and large-scale image acquisition and processing infrastructures[6][7][8]. He has been involved in neuroimaging research intiatives in Europe and Canada, including LINeM (Laboratoire International de Neuroimagerie et de Modélisation) and CATI (Centre d'Acquisition et de Traitement d'Images)[9].

Education and career

[edit]

He earned a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Rennes in 1981[2], followed by a master's degree in data science and information processing techniques in 1982 at IRISA, University of Rennes I[2]. He completed a PhD in computer science in 1985 at the same institution, specializing in multidimensional data analysis and statistics[2]. In 1986, he carried out postdoctoral research at INRIA and IRISA, focusing on graph-based multidimensional data analysis[2]. In 1995, he obtained the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) in medical image processing and modeling from Paris-Dauphine University[2].

Benali began his academic career as an assistant professor at the Université de Rennes II, Institut Universitaire de Technologie, Vannes (1986–1987)[2]. He then joined the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM), initially as a Research Engineer (1987–1995) in Paris[2], where he developed imaging tools for oncology applications including digital mammography, positron emission tomography (PET), and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)[10].

From 1995 onward, he held successive research positions at INSERM, including Research Scientist at the Laboratoire d'Imagerie Fonctionnelle (1995–2002) and Research Director at the Laboratoire d'Imagerie Biomédicale (2002–2015), affiliated with Université Pierre et Marie Curie[2]. During this period, he developed a sustained research program in brain imaging at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris[11][12][13][14]. In 2016, Benali joined Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, as Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science[1][2][15]. In 2017, he was appointed Tier I Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Imaging and Healthy Aging[3][2][16].

Research and leadership

[edit]

Between 2008 and 2015, Benali served as co-director of LINeM, an international joint research laboratory in neuroimaging and modeling involving INSERM, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, and Université de Montréal[2]. From 2009 to 2014, he was Director of INSERM Unit U678 (Functional Imaging), and from 2014 to 2016, deputy director of INSERM–CNRS–UPMC Unit U1146 (Biomedical Imaging)[2].

At Concordia University, he served as Interim Scientific Director of the PERFORM Centre (2016–2017) and subsequently as its Scientific Director (since 2018)[17][18][2]. He is listed as being in charge of the Neuroscience of Aging research theme at CRIUGM, Université de Montréal[5].

His research focuses on computational neuroimaging, brain connectivity analysis, multimodal data integration, and the development of quantitative biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases and aging[6].

Honours and service

[edit]

In 2019, Benali was named to Concordia University's Provost's Circle of Distinction in recognition of his academic leadership and research impact[19][2]. In 2025, he was ranked among Canada's leading scientist by Research.com[20].

Throughout his career, he has received funding from major national and international research programs and has served on expert and evaluation committees for organizations including the European Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and France's Agence Nationale de la Recherche[2]. From 2022 to 2024, he was a member of France's international committee for its national Digital Health Program[2].
