The Gillespie Pass Circuit is a 56km tramping (hiking) track located within the Mount Aspiring National Park, in the South Island of New Zealand. The track can be completed in either direction starting at either the confluence of the Young and Makarora Rivers, or the confluence of the Wilkin and Makarora Rivers; both of which are near the township of Makarora.
The New Zealand Department of Conservation describes this track as an excellent 3-4 day walk with spectacular scenery but emphasises that it should only be undertaken by experienced parties with river crossing skills.[1][2] There is also an optional side trip to Crucible Lake. It is not recommended in Winter due to snow, ice, and avalanche risk.[1][3] They maintain two huts along the track: Siberia Hut, and Young Hut, both of which can be booked via the Department of Conservation website. In addition there is the Young Forks campsite.
While not a Great Walk the Gillespie Pass Circuit is considered one of the best multi-day walks without the crowds.[4]
Incidents
[edit]In February 2020 two people drowned in the Makaroa River while hiking the Gillespie Pass Circuit[5]. This incident prompted the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council to create a video to help walkers prepare for such river crossings[2].
