Dustin Lynn is an American filmmaker, director, cinematographer, photographer, and composer whose work spans documentary film, contemporary art, fashion film, music video, and experimental music. He has been profiled by Cool Hunting for his documentary and environmental film work.[1]

Career

[edit]

Documentary and art practice

[edit]

In 2007, Cool Hunting published a feature and interview with Lynn, describing his work in documentary filmmaking, cinematography, art direction, and environmental projects.[1] The article discussed early short films including Tranquil Music and The Half Way Tree, as well as his work with Jack Johnson, Dan Malloy, Minnie Driver, and Adventure Ecology.[1]

Lynn participated in Adventure Ecology’s “Toxico” expedition in Ecuador documenting environmental conditions in the region.[2] His film from the expedition was later presented in the exhibition ECHO wanted at Galerie Karsten Greve in Paris.[3]

Lynn has also worked on environmental documentary projects with David de Rothschild. In an interview with Condé Nast Traveler, de Rothschild referred to making a film in Japan about overfishing with Lynn.[4]

Lynn directed Collected Harmony, a short film about filmmaker Harmony Korine, filmed during the Venice Film Festival and presented by Gagosian.[5]

In 2021, Lynn directed Every Thought Flies (Time is the Teacher), a documentary film presented as part of the COSMOS program at the Le Guess Who? festival.[6]

Fashion film and music video work

[edit]

Lynn directed Obscure Desires for Alexander McQueen as part of the Selfridges Film Project in London.[7][8]

Lynn has directed fashion films for brands including Corto Moltedo. WWD reported that a specially commissioned short film by Lynn was shown at the opening of Corto Moltedo’s Milan store.[9]

In 2014, Lynn directed a performance film for Adidas in collaboration with Marina Abramović, reinterpreting Abramović’s work Work Relation. The project was released through SHOWstudio and covered by publications including Adweek and Wonderland.[10][11][12]

Lynn has directed music videos including “If You Can’t Love This All Goes Away” by Flo Morrissey, which premiered in i-D,[13] and “Carried Away” by E Ruscha V, which premiered in the Los Angeles Times.[14]

Music

[edit]

As a musician, Lynn is a member of the experimental music project Dukes of Chutney, alongside John Paul Jones and Petra. CLOT Magazine described the group’s work as drawing on field recordings, ambient composition, and experimental pop.[15]

The group’s debut album Hazel was covered by Bandcamp Daily and reviewed by publications including MOJO and HHV Mag.[16][17][18]

Music by Dukes of Chutney was featured in the soundtrack for Chanel’s Cruise 2014/15 fashion show in Dubai.[19]
