Decentralized e-commerce refers to electronic commerce systems that use distributed technologies, particularly blockchain networks, to support transactions, marketplaces or other parts of online commerce. The term is also used in academic and industry literature alongside terms such as Web3 commerce and blockchain-based commerce. The terminology is not yet standardized, and the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.[1]
Characteristics
[edit]Decentralized e-commerce can use blockchain networks for payment settlement, digital ownership, smart contracts and peer-to-peer transactions. Unlike conventional e-commerce platforms, some decentralized systems distribute parts of marketplace or payment functions across blockchain networks or other decentralized infrastructure.[2]
Cryptocurrency payments are one application of blockchain-based commerce. Stablecoins can also be used for online purchases and settlement where merchants or payment platforms support them.
Development
[edit]Research into blockchain-based e-commerce has examined decentralized marketplaces, cryptocurrency payments, token-based incentives and the use of smart contracts in online transactions. More recent work has also examined the relationship between decentralized commerce, Web3 applications and agentic commerce.[3]
Examples of companies and platforms involved in cryptocurrency-based commerce include payment-card services, cryptocurrency marketplaces and online stores that allow digital assets to be used for purchases. Uquid, founded in 2016, is one company that has developed services in this area.[4]
