Davide La Sala is an Italian technical artist and creative technologist known for his work in computer graphics, visual effects, virtual reality and augmented reality. He has worked in feature film production and later at Oculus and Facebook/Meta, including on Oculus Rooms, Oculus Avatars, Spark AR and Meta Orion AR Glasses.

Career

[edit]

La Sala began working in computer graphics in the late 1990s. In a 2020 interview with Wired Italia, he said that he started his career in 1998, at the age of 17, working at BlissCoMedia, the computer graphics division of Bliss Corporation.[1] During that period he worked on the music video for Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)".[2]

He later worked in visual effects and feature animation. According to his AWE EU 2019 speaker profile, before joining Facebook's Spark AR team he worked on more than fifteen Hollywood films at companies including DreamWorks Animation, Framestore and MPC, as well as working for Oculus.[3] His film credits are also listed on IMDb.[4]

In 2016, La Sala joined Oculus VR, where he contributed to Oculus Rooms and early work related to Oculus Avatars.[1] He later joined Facebook's Spark AR team in November 2016.[1] At Spark AR, he worked on tools and workflows for augmented reality creation. Wired Italia described Spark AR as a platform with more than 400,000 active creators in over 190 countries and reported that creators had published 1.2 million AR effects at the time of the article.[1] The same article discussed his work in relation to FaceMesh, a 3D face representation used in selfie-based augmented reality effects.[1]

His later work at Meta has included technical art leadership across avatars, augmented reality, spatial tooling, real-time character systems and AI-assisted creative workflows.

La Sala also contributed to branded augmented reality effects for entertainment properties. In collaboration with Dan Moller and Ricardo Caetano, he worked on Instagram AR filters for Kojima Productions and 505 Games to promote the release of Death Stranding, adapting game models into interactive AR filters.[5]

Public speaking and media

[edit]

In 2019, La Sala was a speaker at AWE EU, where his session was titled Intro to Facebook's Spark AR: Immersive Experience Workflows in Spark AR.[3] A recording of the talk was published on YouTube.[6]

He has also appeared in video discussions and interviews about virtual reality, augmented reality and computer graphics.[7][8]
