Dale May is an American advertising photographer, commercial director, CGI artist, and visual effects artist based in New York City. His work combines studio photography with photorealistic CGI-built environments for advertising campaigns and fine art photography. He is known for the photography series Lego Wars and was named International Photography Awards Special Photographer of the Year in 2024.

May graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York City.[1]

Photography and advertising

May has worked as an advertising photographer for more than three decades. His editorial portrait work includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Charlize Theron, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jared Leto.[1]

May's portrait of Cumberbatch received a Communication Arts Photography Annual Award of Excellence in 2015.[1]

May's advertising and fine art work incorporates studio photography with CGI-built environments created in Blender.[2]

Film

In 2003, May co-wrote and directed the short film Jer-Z Knights, featuring members of the mock metal band Satanicide. The film was an official selection of the 2003 Sundance Film Festival Shorts Program.[3]

His short film Starlight Falls Motel, Room 4, written, directed, and produced by May, was selected for the 2025 New York Shorts International Film Festival. The film was produced using greenscreen photography and CGI-built environments.[4]

Lego Wars

Beginning in 2011, May developed Lego Wars, a fine art photography series depicting Star Wars Lego minifigures in macro studio photography, often juxtaposed with luxury fashion imagery. Works in the series include Coco Vader, Chewy Burch, and V3P0.[5][6][7][8]

Lego Wars was exhibited at the Samuel Owen Gallery in Greenwich, Connecticut beginning in 2011.[9]
