Cruze Control are a New Zealand four-piece band formed in Dunedin. Their musical style has been described as reggae and psychedelic, and they are considered a part of the broader New Zealand reggae scene.
Cruze Control were formed in Dunedin with four members and gained national recognition after the release of their 2023 single King Tide as part of their 2024 eponymous album, Cruze Control. The group has toured every year across New Zealand since then.[1]
History
[edit]The band Cruze Control formed at some point before 2023 when their bassist Maxwell ‘Teddy’ Burt and their guitarist Cam MacFarlane bought a drumkit at their second year at University College, Otago with the intention of starting a band. Maxwell temporarily withdrew from the band during the COVID-19 pandemic, and after his return in 2023 the band met their frontman, vocalist and guitarist Tommy Meek, after which they began working on a studio album.
The band self-published a single titled King Tide in 2023 which was included in a nine-track album eponymously titled Cruze Control, subsequently published in 2024. King Tide placed No. 7 on the Hot NZ Singles chart and Cruze Control charted at No. 19 on the same list, also placing No. 20 on the Official Top 20 Aotearoa Albums chart.[2] The band subsequently promoted the album through their 2025 Summer Tour.[1] The band's 2024 single When I Land charted at No. 10 on Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles and their next single of that year Long White Cloud charted at No. 13.
In 2024, the band placed as finalists in the DIG THE GIG band competition.[3]
The band released a double single titled Poison Medicine in 2026, written during Tommy’s treatment for blood cancer.[4]
