The Cornell 7 is a term popularized by social media and Internet activism referring to seven male members of the Chi Phi fraternity at Cornell University, who were named in a high-profile civil lawsuit filed in September 2026. The lawsuit alleges that the men drugged and gang-raped a female student (identified as Jane Doe) at an off campus fraternity house in October 2024. The case sparked nation wide scrutiny regarding how universities handle campus sexual assault allegations, institutional transparency, and the role of online vigilante activism.
According to the civil complaint filed in September 2026, the plaintiff was allegedly incapacitated by alcohol and drugs during a gathering at the Chi Phi fraternity house on October 19, 2024. The lawsuit states that frat members shared Snapchat group text messages encouraging others to join the assault.
The victim reported the incident to Cornell University Police. However, the local DA declined to press charges in 2024.[2]
The public outcry in this case has many layers. One of the major concerns is the reported punishment that the boys were given. 2 members of the fraternity were expelled, while 5 others received suspensions, workshops and essay-writing tasks.
The District Attorney later stated that the initial decision at the time indicating the encounter was consensual, noting that it often takes significant time for trauma victims to process sexual assault. Concurrently, Cornell University conducted an internal disciplinary hearing. the university permanently barred the local Chi Phi chapter from campus in late 2024.
