caba, formerly the Chartered Accountants' Benevolent Association, is a charity in the United Kingdom that provides welfare, financial, health and career support to members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) community. Those eligible for support include current and former ICAEW members, ACA students, and their close family dependants.[1] Although it works closely with the ICAEW, caba is an independent registered charity rather than part of the institute.[2]
History
[edit]caba was founded in 1886, six years after the establishment of the ICAEW, with the aim of providing financial assistance to chartered accountants in need at a time when there was no state welfare provision.[2][1]
The charity's later financial position was shaped significantly by a bequest from the ICAEW member Henry Charles Merrett, who died in 1958. Funds and land from his estate were received by the association over the following decades; land associated with the bequest was sold to developers in 2005.[2] Having been based in London for much of its history, the organisation relocated to the Midlands, moving to Daventry and subsequently to Rugby in 2007 in order to be more accessible across the country.[2]
Over the 20th and 21st centuries, caba broadened its work beyond direct financial assistance to include wellbeing, health and career support, reflecting changes in the needs of the profession.[3]
Services
[edit]caba provides a range of confidential support services to people within the ICAEW community who are facing personal, financial or health-related challenges.[4] These include financial assistance such as grants and debt advice; mental health support and counselling; career coaching and employability support; legal and practical guidance; support for people affected by illness or caring responsibilities; and neurodiversity assessments and related support.[4] Services are available to eligible people in the United Kingdom and internationally.[4]
Eligibility
[edit]Support from caba is available to current and former members of the ICAEW, ACA students, certain ICAEW staff, and close family dependants of eligible individuals. The eligibility criteria vary depending on the type of support being provided.[5]
Governance and status
[edit]caba is a registered charity in England and Wales (charity number 1116973) and is constituted as a charitable company.[6][7] It is governed by a board of trustees responsible for its strategic direction and operations.[8]
Relationship with the ICAEW
[edit]caba works closely with the ICAEW but operates independently of it. While the ICAEW is responsible for the regulation and representation of chartered accountants, caba focuses on supporting members of the wider ICAEW community who face financial difficulty or challenges with their physical or mental health.[2][4]
