Plot

[edit]

Ten-year-old Ashwin lives in a cramped dwelling in Chennai with his eighteen-year-old stepsister, Lakshmi, and their alcoholic father. Lakshmi works at several jobs to keep Ashwin enrolled in a private school. There, his classmates Senthil and Roslee regularly mock and bully him because of his worn clothes and damaged shoes. Although his friend Rahul urges him to retaliate, Ashwin follows Lakshmi's advice not to fight.

During a school field trip to a village, Ashwin and Rahul become separated from their group in a cornfield. Ashwin encounters a moving scarecrow that follows him as he tries to escape. The scarecrow subsequently appears in his home and follows him to school. Initially terrified, Ashwin confronts it and asks it to leave him alone. When Senthil and Roslee next attack him, however, the scarecrow intervenes and drives them away. Ashwin realises that no one else can see it, and the two become friends.

One night, the scarecrow uses its magical powers to take Ashwin flying above the city. At the lighthouse in Mamallapuram, it reveals its true identity as Saravanan, a ten-year-old boy from the village visited by Ashwin's class. Saravanan's mother works as a cook in the government's school midday-meal program. Saravanan had discovered that Baskar, the programme's local coordinator, was stealing provisions intended for schoolchildren and selling prepared food to local eateries. After Saravanan recorded evidence of the thefts on his mother's phone, Baskar's accomplices pursued him and killed him by throwing him into a well.

Saravanan explains that his spirit cannot depart until his unfinished task is completed: Baskar and his accomplices must be prosecuted for the theft and his murder. Ashwin agrees to help Saravanan expose the crimes and bring the culprits to justice.[3]

Reception

[edit]

The film received good reviews from kids and mixed reviews from the adults. A critic for The Times of India rated it 2.5 out of 5. The review praised its depiction of the relationship between Ashwin and Lakshmi, the parallel between Ashwin and Saravanan, and the comedy arising from the children's innocence. It criticised the film's narrative construction, abrupt transitions, predictability, and extended second half, while describing it overall as a clean, sincere, child-centered fantasy.[3]
