Basamba Drammeh (born on 5 November 1986) is a distinguished Gambian social worker, human rights advocate, social entrepreneur, a banker, and international development practitioner.[1] [2][3]

Drammeh has held leadership roles in social work and business. He has served as president of the Association of Social Workers in The Gambia since 2019. In 2024, he was appointed the IFSW representative to the United Nations. In 2025, he was nominated as The Gambia's representative on the Commonwealth Council for Social Work.[1][4] He is also Secretary General of the Abubakary Jawara Foundation and hosts Basamba's Take. In business, he is Managing Director of Sahel Minerals Company Limited and has been associated with GAMGO Company Limited. [1][5][4][6][7]

Early life and education

Born in Dipa Kunda, The Gambia, Drammeh attended Bakoteh Primary School, SOS Herman Gmeiner Senior Secondary School, and The University of The Gambia.

He studied social work at undergraduate level before earning a master's degree in International Human Rights Law and Humanitarian Action from Sciences Po in Paris, specialising in Diplomacy and African Studies. He also holds qualifications in social work and business administration.[8]

Career

Social work

Drammeh is a social worker and president of the Association of Social Workers in The Gambia (TASWIG). He has been involved in efforts to strengthen social services and support vulnerable communities. In 2024, TASWIG signed an agreement with the Care and Prevention Foundation to cooperate on community care, family welfare and counselling.

Human rights

Drammeh has advocated for human rights and social equality. In 2018, he publicly raised concerns about hereditary slavery and caste-based discrimination in Soninke communities in The Gambia.

Business and international activities

Drammeh has also worked in business and international trade. He has served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FICASMART Africa Trade Company. In 2026, he was reported as Managing Director of Basalt Operations at GAMGO Company Limited.

He has participated in Africa–Europe business forums and programmes focused on diplomacy, trade and social development.

Community work and media

Drammeh is Secretary General of the Abubakary Jawara Foundation, which supports vulnerable communities through education, healthcare and other assistance. He also hosts Basamba's Take, a television programme covering social, economic and political issues.

Awards and recognition

  1. In 2025, Drammeh received an international award from Ceci Educare Oy in Helsinki, Finland. He was recognized for his work in social development and diplomacy.[9]
  2. He also received the 2023 Obasango Award for empowering young people.
