Barry Scott is an American bluegrass and gospel singer best known for his work as a vocalist and guitarist with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. He later founded the bluegrass gospel group Barry Scott & Second Wind, whose debut album In God’s Time received a Grammy nomination for Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album.[1]
Early life
[edit]Scott grew up in Ellijay, Georgia, and began performing southern gospel music at a young age. He sang with several gospel groups during his youth, including regional quartets.[2]
Career
[edit]Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver
[edit]Scott joined Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver in the 1990s and spent nine years with the band, contributing lead vocals and guitar to several recordings.[2] His work with DLQ helped establish him as a prominent voice in bluegrass gospel.
Barry Scott & Second Wind
[edit]Scott founded Barry Scott & Second Wind in 2005. Their debut album, In God’s Time, was released by Rebel Records and earned a Grammy nomination.[3] The group’s second album, Sunday Mornin’ Meetin’ Time, was released in 2010.[3]
Second Wind performed at major bluegrass festivals and received positive critical attention within the bluegrass gospel community.[2]
Beachley & Scott Band
[edit]In 2010 Scott formed the Beachley & Scott Band with former Quicksilver bandmate Darren Beachley.[2] He left the group in 2011 to return to gospel‑focused projects.
Musical style
[edit]Scott is known for his powerful lead vocals, clear diction, and gospel‑influenced phrasing, blending bluegrass instrumentation with southern gospel harmony structures.[4]
