Bailley is an Indian brand of packaged drinking water manufactured and owned by Parle Agro. Introduced in 1993, it is one of the major competitors in the Indian bottled water industry, operating within an organized domestic market valued at approximately ₹16,000 crore.[1]

History

[edit]

Parle Agro launched Bailley in 1993 as part of a corporate diversification strategy following the division of the original Parle group of companies.[2] Upon its introduction, it was the second major brand to enter the Indian packaged drinking water sector, which had historically been dominated by Bisleri.

Market share and competition

[edit]

The Indian packaged drinking water segment is highly fragmented, featuring major multinational corporations, legacy domestic brands, and numerous unorganized regional players.[3]

As of recent market analyses, Bailley holds an estimated 7% share of the organized national market. It competes directly against industry leader Bisleri (36%), Coca-Cola's Kinley (20%), PepsiCo's Aquafina (15%), the IRCTC's Rail Neer (10%), and Tata's Himalayan (5%).[4][5]

Operations and distribution

[edit]

Parle Agro makes beverage brands drinks like Frooti and Appy Fizz in central factories, but bottles Bailley through local partners to cut shipping costs. [6]

The company partners with independent local bottling units across India to source, purify, and distribute the water within specific regional territories. Parle Agro supports these franchisees by providing centralized packaging materials, such as uniformly manufactured PET preforms, to ensure brand consistency and deter counterfeiting.[7]

This regional franchisee structure allows the brand to continuously expand into new territories. For example, in November 2021, Parle Agro established operations in Northeast India by partnering with Reliable Hydrotech to launch localized Bailley bottling and distribution in Manipur.[8]
