[edit]In 1932, Balouch left Sindh as an economic migrant, traveling to Gibraltar and then settling in Spain.[5] He became fascinated by flamenco and the broader musical traditions of the Iberian Peninsula, particularly cante jondo (deep song).[2] He dedicated his career to exploring and performing the connections between Andalusian cante jondo and Sindhi Sufi music.[1]
Balouch's performances included renditions of traditional forms such as the Malagueña, performed with Spanish guitar accompaniment.[3] He also studied and wrote about the shared roots of South Asian and Andalusian musical traditions.[4] His work represents one of the earliest documented cross-cultural musical dialogues between South Asia and Spain.[6]
Legacy
[edit]Balouch's recordings have been reissued by Ajam Records, introducing his work to a new generation of listeners.[2] His life and music have been the subject of academic study, including a 2021 publication by Stefan Williamson Fa at Lund University.[4]
