Awal LM (Template:Lang-ber) is an open-source natural language processing (NLP) engine and language model developed specifically for the Tamazight language and its native Tifinagh script.[1] Engineered completely from scratch in pure C++, the system operates without relying on conventional deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.[2]
Background and development
[edit]Awal LM was created by Moroccan software developer and independent AI researcher Rachid Nichan. The project was initiated to address the digital scarcity of indigenous African languages in modern generative artificial intelligence and to support the constitutional status of Tamazight as an official language in Morocco.[3]
Architecture and features
[edit]- Pure C++ Engine: The neural network and inference pipeline are written from scratch in C++, enabling lightweight memory consumption and response latency under 5 milliseconds on standard CPU hardware.[4]
- Tifinagh Tokenizer: The system includes a custom multi-byte UTF-8 tokenizer designed to preserve the 33 official Tifinagh characters recognized by the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM).[2]
- Interface & API: The web platform incorporates an on-screen 33-key virtual Tifinagh keyboard for direct user interaction, as well as a developer REST API for third-party application integration.
- Capabilities: In addition to conversational and cultural queries, the model supports lexical definitions, grammatical verb conjugations, and domain code generation (HTML and CSS) in Tamazight.
Media reception
[edit]The project received notable coverage in national and international media outlets, including the public broadcaster 2M.ma, digital news daily Al Oâmk Al Maghribi, Le360, and Yabiladi.[1][2]

Please delete the portions which were LLM-generated, and summarize in your own words a range of independent, reliable, published sources that discuss the subject. If you have used an LLM but you believe that your use is covered by one of the two exceptions (basic copyediting and translation between two languages in which you are fully fluent), please provide a transcript of the prompt(s) you used while writing your draft (see the how-to guide). Reviewers can make mistakes. If you have not received any LLM assistance, you may seek a second opinion at the AfC Help Desk.
